So as I'm piecing my '86 EB back together, I'm looking at things like restoring the Cruise Control. ( '86 fullsize EB, carb'd 351w, C6 ) I'm wondering where I should expect to find the stock control unit, and where it gets it's speed data from. I also have a question on a plug that comes through the firewall, it's about 6" long, it has 3 wires ( red blue red according to my 13 y/o ). There's another plug with a jumper on the end of it up by the wiper that has me curious. I've gone over the schematics in my Haynes, and haven't seen anything that corresponds to these. There's also a black mystery box to the right of the steering column zip tied in place, tho I haven't stretched things out to see what goes where.
Not sure on the speed control module, but it gets its data from a sensor thats right by were the steering colunm comes out under the hood. Look over the speedometer cable and it should be 2 peaces and conects right in there. then continues on to the speedo.
The black box thats ziptied is probly an alarm system, that was standard for the installers to do that.
Hey toolman, we have the same truck. I am going to be following this so keep us posted. Mine doesn't work either. Strange, I was just thinking about trying to trouble shoot that problem today.
Was it normal to have the rear window defrost switch mounted to the bottom of the dash ? This truck looks like a lot of things were started but not finished IE: the grounds were all disconnected, vacuum line for the vents disconnected, fuses missing, drippy drain plug, drippy tranny cooler lines, etc....so I've slowly been straightening things out as I can. It had an aftermarket cruise put in as well, and my goal is either to scavenge an OEM setup from the local pull-n-save, or get an aftermarket one and splice it into the OEM column harness to at least give the appearance of stock in the cab. While poking around this afternoon, I also found a length of flat phone cord that goes I don't know where.
Yes that is where the rear defrost switch is stock. Both my Bronc's are there. Cant help you on the phone cord thing though. My cruise is on the steering wheel (stock). It sounds like you are starting where I pretty much did. Our was a nightmare when I brought it home on the low boy I drive for my job. I'm gonna bump one of my old posts so you can get an idea of the headache we have been through getting it driveable.
Yeah this one had a few bugs....weirdest was electrical...Weak brake lights, weak dome lights, weak headlights, turn on the headlights and the temp gauge nearly pegs ( dim the dash lights and it goes down ) open the door, or turn on anything electrical for that matter and the radio drops out, then slowly comes back on. Turned out to be a few grounds disconnected. Hooked em all up again and whattya know, nice bright headlights, good dash lights, well behaved gauges, nice bright turn signals, but NO dome, and NO brake lights !! Apparently they were still grounded circuits and everything was back feeding through them. They weren't getting any current on their own because the fuses were out. Popped in a couple new fuses and haven't looked back since ( except to check my brake lights )
Sweet! Does your key switch on the gate work? I about fell over when I stuck the key in mine and the window worked.
Got any pics? On mine the body sucks, but the interior is is relly good shape.
Yep, my back window goes up and down. Sometime's it's a little sluggish, but it's been making it. Of course my passenger side window just quit. This morning I learned that the vacuum line for the transmission modulator is like 2 sizes larger than the T it's attached to. I over choked it this morning and got a little backfire and it popped right off. I stuck it back on, but have plans to replace it with one that fits a little more snug. I'm also hunting for a gauge surround since the one I have doesn't have the vents...there's ducting, and I think it's a little comical when I get air blowing out around the gauges, but some good flow would be nice. It's always one more thing huh ?? I'll see if I can dig up the camera tomorrow and post some pics.
OH....and my ignition is currently stuck in ( at a minimum ) the ACC position. Handy when you forget to put the windows up first, but hard on the alternator I imagine.
