First, a lil bit of info.
I recently upgraded from a 90 Ext. cab with a 300 six, auto & 3.o8 gears to a 97 3 door with the 5.4, auto, 3.55 gears and 265/70r17's.
Wow...what a difference. My only disappointment was that mileage seemed to be nearly identical...
Now the GOOD news !!!
I was getting appx. 12.5 MPG outta my new truck.
Most of my driving is city with a lil bit of short distance hwy. thrown in. I started poking around in the engine section here and found an article on the Poormans FIPK. The more i Read the more interested I got. Being a poor working class dad i decided to give it a go (could'nt hurt).
I followed all the instructions and used the original paper filter that was in the truck and 30 mins later it was a done deal.
On my 1st trip to work the truck had a lil more aggresive sound coming from the engine...
On the way to take the kids to school the next morning, I chirped the tires taking off at the corner...
Truck DID have more POWER. And yesterday when i filled up I checked my mileage.
I went from 12.5 to 14 MPG.
Guys if you REALLY want to do something cheap, easy and good for your truck...YA GOTTA TRY THIS
hey there i have a 92 f 150 xlt with a v8 302 and im gettin bad gas milage about 8 mpg!!!! i cant afford it!!! i see that you did something cheap and easy and you found it on here but i have been lookin for about 30 mins and i can t find anything on poormans fipk!! can you tell me where i can find it or can you just tell me what to do!!! im sure anything can help!! thanks
I have a '97 Lariat that I just bought in July. It has the 5.4L V-8 and I have been looking around for an inexpensive way to boost horsepower. I've been looking on Ebay for FIPKs and other items. I have seen some no-name cold air intake kits and also the K&N and MAC FIPKs. The K&N goes for about $225 and the MAC was going for about $150. How much did you pay for your FIPK? Where can I find one? Thanks!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Aug-02 AT 08:52 PM (EST)]On another web site I found a guy who had posted pictures and detailed instructions on how to accomplish this feat for just the cost of the K&N filter (about $55) and some labor. His initial response on the improved performance (and sound) was encouraging. I remember quite well how to do the conversion (it is very simple), but it is too lengthy for me to try and list here (especially without pictures). I’ll see if I can find the web site and article for anyone interested. Contact me via my email at SpearLA@netscape.net and I will send you the link for the site.
After writting this I went to make sure I actually remembered where I found it. Good news! I just found it and have saved the web site address, so contact me if your interested. I will forward it to you as fast as I can, Regards...
