Hello Ken,
I am going to build or try to build my 1994 Ford F-150 XLT,5L w/3.08 gear ratio, so it will rock on the streets : Headers,Dual Exhaust,K&N Air filter sys.,which Chip should I use to get the Max. H.P. and what is your thoughts on a Cam and could you tell me if this is a Roller Motor? Also where to start ??
Forget the chip, spend your money on gears. Change the 3.08 open diff for a 3.73 or 4.10 limited slip. Right now your engine doesn't even get into its power range in second gear on the street.
Gearing isn't going to give more horsepower. It will give you more on the bottom end but it will lower the top speed of the truck and increase fuel consumption. You need to tell us what you're willing to give up to get more umppphhhh..... you can't get something for nothing. There's always trade-offs.
For sure bigger gearing will reduce highway fuel economy, but it should have little or no effect on around town mileage. I read "make it rock on the street" as improved performance at the stoplight grand prix and a 3.08 open is not the gearset for that job.
Reduce top speed?? Right now his truck has a theoretical top speed in drive of about 150 MPH, changing to 3.73s would reduce that to around 125 and 4.10s to about 115. Given that trucks are aerodynamically challenged, I doubt that there is any real difference in top end.
