I bought a 73 F-100 2 years ago. It had 93,000 original Georgia driven miles on it. I've spent the last 2 years getting body and interior back to perfect shape. It just came back from the paint shop yesterday. I had it painted Pearl White. I've replaced all the windows and had Interior done in rolled and pleated leather. Now to my question. It has a stock 302 2v with a C-4 auto in it.I would like to up the preformance but keep it for towing my bass boat so I don't want to go too radical. What would be the best modifications for more power to begin with? 73 F-100 shortbed 302 cu. in. C4 auto
LAST EDITED ON 17-Jun-01 AT 12:51 PM (EST)[p]well, if you just want bolt on mods, headers work, couple that with a free flowing exhaust and you got a nice sound and a lot more go these 302's love to breathe. a new performance carb of your choice, a cam and a conversion to electronic ignition always help. plus the ign gives a lil more gas milage. have fun with it, thats always a top priority
I agree with the suggestions listed above for the motor, as for the tranny, have it rebuilt and install a good shift kit. It will really help when your towing your boat.
As for a cam, I would suggest the E303 from Ford Motorsports, it is emissions legal and has good low end pull.
How much you wanna spend? You want something that it totally bad but still streetable? I'd yank the 302 and put in a stroked 351. You can rebuild a 351 with a stroker crank (making it a 393) for pretty cheap, you'd really only be out for the crank. You use 302 pistons, which you'd buy if you were going to rebuild anyway, and you use your stock 351 rods. With the long stroke you'll make tons of torque and can use a larger cam, yet still have a good idle. I'd put on some Trick Flow or Edelbrock aluminum heads. You could make 400 hp pretty easy and you wouldn't sacrifice low end, or idle quality. I've been thinking about doing that to a '65 or '66 Mustang.
I appreciate all the advise. I prefer to build the motor and transmision the truck came with. Its all original and all the numbers will match that way. I've ordered a set of headman powder coated headers and set up a appointment at exhaust shop for new stainless 2 1/2 " exhaust. Do y'all think a edelbrock 600cfm with a edelebrock torqer cam kit and manifold would do my little 302 justice. 73 F-100 shortbed 302 cu. in. C4 auto
