got board and buit an Analyzer

Well I've had this kit following me since High school. Its a Heathkit CM_1073 Automotive Analyzer. It tests 3-8 cylinder engines, testing High & Low rpm, dwell, volts. Case is a little dirty from it being in storage without a box. As well as from using it this evening to test it. I've Also built there clamp on Timing light cm-1040, and put it into a busted actron timing light housing. I will say that I wish the company was still around as I would love to pick up the emissions tester as well as the shop version of the analyzer. They even had a Rally pack kit at one point consisting of a tach and clock kit.

HeathKit is still in business, although it's unclear on how to purchase from them.

Switched out the wires to a more supple wire that isn't so stiff. and I cleaned off the dirt lol. Its a great tool and is small enough to be tucked under the seat.

I have the older bench model that I need to make a pickup loop for at some point. Bridging hobbies: Old cars and old electronics.

No, I'm talking about the clamp for the spark plug wire. It's basically a C-I form inductor where you wrap the wire around the 'C' laminations and the 'I' laminations complete the magnetic circuit. I have a copy of the original assembly manual, and I know I have laminations in my giant stash of old electronics to do the job. Just a matter of dedicating the time. And I'm sure it will need to be re-capped. Plug in the wall type. Model CO-1015.
Not my ad, but this is the model:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Heathkit-Ignition-Analyzer-model-CO-1015-Working-/251695038021?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item3a9a317e45I got mine for $15 at the flea market. More negative reinforcement for my packrat-itis.

That's neat. My buddy has some old HeathKit tube amps he uses for his listening pleasure. They sounds sweet. He picked them up at a yard sale. A man there built them years ago.

Loved those Heathkits. Always wanted to build some, but was not able growing up. Not alot of stuff left around anymore. I remember the catalogs, you could get ANYTHING.

I do have one of those analyzers. I bought it at a truck club auction we have every year as a fund raiser. It works:

Even found the book online and ordered it:

I was going to just resell it, but it is just sitting around now as I don't know if I really want to sell it. Kinda cool toy.

Can a "clamp" be made that would be able to read amperage in the alternator power lead using induction, instead of running all of the alternator output through an ammeter?

Yes, just like in my Fluke Amp clamp meter.

I've seen small panel mounted digital meters on Ebay that use an inductive coil to read amps.

I always have to restrain myself when I come across an old Sun Engine Analyzer for sale. They usually want too much for a barely operable model which makes it a bit easier. Now a distributor test station, that I wish I could find.

Oh yes the wonderful world of old skool Sun test equipment.
Loved the sun dizzy machine. The only hard part of using them was climbing into a warm/hot engine bay to install the dizzy.

Always felt kind of lost not having one of my own to use a will..
