Cam Bearings

Anybody know any tricks or secets to getting the cam bearings with taking it to a machine shop

If you are fitting new cam bearings you really need to take the block to a shop and get the bearings line bored.

Are you doing a total rebuild or just changing cams? If you just changing cam, leave the old bearings in there. My .02 cents.

Cam bearings are best left to a pro. $45 to install bearings and freeze plugs at the shop I use. You need a special tool and it's easy to booger 'em up. I learned by pulling and reinstalling some old bearings several times to get the hang of it, but I still let my machinist do that stuff. Like slug said, depends on what they look like. JMO also.

Also the cam bearings are of different sizes.
Starting at front of engine the bearings are larger getting smaller at the rear.

How many miles is on the block? Clean the bearings in place with mineral spirits. If there is no copper showing you are in good shape. If there are and gouges replace them. You do not align bore cam bearings! If you have to replace the cam bearings have a good shop do it and fit the cam in the block before you bring it home. Good luck. Ron
