As some of you know I just bought a Late '99 F350 XLT CC Dually with PSD:
I have been around on the FTE since 1999 I think, and have had my share of Ford trucks, but this is the biggest baddest one yet for me, and I'm new to keeping up and maintaining a Diesel engine, I have driven many a BIG truck with a Diesel, but never owned one until now.
I have a good friend who has both a '00 F350, and a '04 F250 and he has given me plenty of guidence on them, but he seems to be away this weekend and I want to kind of freshen everything up including the coolant.
He has said something about Diesels having cavitation and there is an additive I should when changing the coolant, I also think its a good idea to change the thermostat, any tips on this as far as coolant type, or tstat temp?? should I end up with a 50/50 antifreeze mix like a gas motor?? Thanks!!
With a late 99 you should have green cooant in there if you want to stay with green then the FW-16 additive will be required and checked every 30K
The stock tstat is a 192* but www.dieselsite.com sells a 203* stat for our trucks. If you try to find a 203* locally make very sure it is a long stem variety of the 203*. The short stem that napa sells will not close off the bypass and can result in overheating the block.
If you do a complete flush (with distilled water) get 4 gallons of concentrate and pour in then top it off with distilled water (you will have a 50/50 mix - 8 gallon total capacity). It will take about 20 gallons of distilled water to flush it completely.

I thought the only 203* stat that fits are trucks are sold by diesel site. Are they available anywhere else?
OK, Wow!!! So a little warmer tstat (warmer engine temp) is better for the PSD?? I didn't know that.
So, IF I want to stay with the old fashioned GREEN Ethilyne glycol anti-freeze I need the additive then???
Could/should I change/swap to something different?? Red stuff--does IT already have the proper additive in it??
Sorry for so many questions but I really want to maintain my truck right!!
if you go to the gold coolant..you need to make sure the green is all out of your system be for you put the gold in..if you don't..the 2 will mix and jell up in the cooling system..the red ELC i think you still need the additive in it..i am not sure about that one..here is a link to read to find out more Red Coolant (Rotella ELC) good luck...
The red from walmart does not need the additive in it.Well not till 300,000 anyway. Then you add the additive and its good for another 300,000.I just cant remember the name of it right now.
