Do you have keyless entry? It happens to me sometimes, all I have to do is press the unlock button on the remote twice and it allows me to start. Normally happens when I lock from the remote and unlock from the keyless entry. I think it is a security thing.
do you have an aftermarket alarm or remote start? if so it could be a bad start interupt relay in the alarm circuit. Also check the starter relay as they are known to go bad.
no dont have keyless entry its a stripped down xl. no aftermarket alarms,is there any way to check the starter relay. also got codes read today and got a p0266 code.

P0266= Cylinder #2 contribution/balance
When maximum/minimum pulse width adder is exceeded and cylinder does not converge a fault is set.
Without further diagnostics by a competent & certified 6.0 tech it will be hard to determine what is causing this problem.
There is an electrical schematic in the 6.0 bible in the tech section. Starter solenoid is on the starter. Starter relay maybe? Have you by chance checked all the fuses? There was a certain production run of trucks that had the fuses incorrectly installed in the fuse box where the blades didn't actually get into the spade terminals. Electrical is hard, but it sounds like something in the starting circuit where a relay isn't kicking all the juice to the starter.
