Needing New Engine
Myself I would do a wrecker check for a truck write off with low miles first and snag the engine. Keep yours and tear it appart and find out whats knocking...... may only be a 25cent part. Your Turbo engine as is... is worth very good money....
So depending on the shop rates in your area, you can figure out what the bill would be.
Locally the job runs about 1500 dollars at smaller shops.
I have about 4500 dollars in my 6.9 rebuild, but I did almost all the work myself.
I had 3000 in new parts and 1500 in work at the machine shop.
Started with a late 85 6.9 block that had been bored to 20 over and had a .007 taper in the cylinders.
Also I need to point out that the machinist was very good, he got good clean cylinder surfaces with only .003" to play with when he bored the block.
Parts were,
7.3 exhaust valves
7.3 intake valves
7.3 valve guides
Valve seals
7.3 valve seats
6.9 30 over pistons
6.9 30 over rings
Main and rod bearings
Cam bearings
Wrist pin bushings
Freeze plug kit
Melling oil pump
Push rods
Cam and lifters
Upper gasket set
Lower gasket set
Valley pan
Thermostat
Block heater
Oil cooler O rings
ARP head studs
Paint, sealants, filters, oil, coolant, header wrap, Lock tite, moly assembly lube
Machine shop work
Hot tank heads and block
Magnaflux heads and block
Check valve spring tensions
Bore and install guides
Machine valves and seats
Surface heads
Check alignbore
Bore block to 30 over
Install cam bearings and freeze plugs
Mill piston tops .040"
Recondition rods
Fit pistons on rods
Polish crank
Balance rotating assembly
Assemble crank and pistons in block
I had also salvaged a good set of 7.3 rockers from another engine which I used in my 6.9.
Removal, disassembly, paint, reassembly and reinstall was all done by my son and myself.
I reused the ATS upgrade turbo that I already had.
I reused the 7.3 turbo IP that I had.
And I also bought a set of DPS Stage 1 injectors, 300 for them.
And I am running boost numbers over 20 PSI.
If I had paid a shop to do all the work, I figure I would have had 8000 to 9000 in the engine and swap.
Working outside at night and on weekends I had almost a month in the rebuild from start to finish, but I did loose several nights and one weekend to rain.
