I am about to purchase a truck (05 psd) with 35k on it. I know the engine and tranny are covered for 5/100k. Should looking into getting a extended warantee anyway to cover the rest of the truck? I guess I am trying to find out how reliable the rest of the truck is? I can get a 5/up to 100k bumper to bumper for 2k.
That $2K will more exceed the cost of the normal problems you may encounter later in its life. Door actuators being the #1 problem down the road with these trucks.
I am a new owner of a 2000 7.3 EX with 53,000. I went with the extended warrantee. One week later it was at the dealer for all new door locks. The ex also had an oil leak at the top end that was repaired before the sale. I now have an issue with the AM site of the radio with engine noise. They all have little issues that can be repaired. I have blow out two spark plugs on my 5.4 E350. I had to make repairs myself. It was out of warrantee. It will only take one big repair to break even. Even with all the little repairs I still think Ford make a great truck.

---sinbad-no, the factory warranty on the trans is 3/36.ONLY the diesel engine is covered for 5/100 with a $100.00 deductible. so yes i would get the warranty,i have used my esp for a trans,w/pump,hubs,actuators for doors, heated seat failure, see toreador's link
$2K is cheap to pay if you lose a tranny or have to have a turbo replaced once it's out of warranty.. I have had them on both my Yukon and Suburban and they paid for themselves... DON'T BUY ONE FROM THE DEALER.....Go to your credit union or bank as warranty sales are a MAJOR part of a dealers profit...I got a full coverage,$0 ded thru my C.U on my '98 'Burb for $1550 and the dealer wanted $2800 for a not as good $250 ded. When I renewed it at 70K miles,I got it thru Warranties4wheels.com for $1600 and also was for FULL coverage at $0 ded...I was also able to transfer to the new owner when I sold it for a $100 tsf fee....
I just bought an ext.warranty for my 05 X w psd .
3100.00 from ford , but I like the fact that I drop it off get a free loaner and I'm on my way.
My 03 lost a tranny 2800.00 so its well worth the piece of mind IMO

like anything else, you can wheel-n-deal for the price of and x-warranty,but with an aftmkt warranty, alternate transportation is regulated by the hours to do an effected repair,,not with factory, ya get 5 days up front regardless
