Well i was talking around the other night about buying my highboy with a 390 in it. My buddy pipes up and says hes got a motor in his garage that his father in law left there and that he thinks its a 390. Well i go look and when he pulled the cover back i knew right off it was either a 460 or a 429. Well after a call to his father in law i find that its a 429 pulled from a 72 LTD. Well the motor turns over and i bougth it and the engine stand for $60. I gotta get it home next week sometime. Its been in the garage heated and covered up for 12 yrs. And he said the car had low miles when it was pulled. Ya guys think i did good? Anyhow im gonna go ahead and do a buildup and i was wondering about some good performance parts. Im puttin it in a 79 F-350 crew cab longbed. Its gonna be 4wd with a C6 tranny and im hopin 38s. Ill be running about a 4.56 gear ratio. So what should i go with performance wise? I know it wont be a race car but id like to be able to do the occasional burnout. Im new to the 429/460 deal so help is much appreciated.
Thanks, Dave
Get the casting numbers off the heads, if it's a 72 it could either have the worst 385 series heads or the best that year. casting numbers D2VE equals worst, D2OE equals one of the best.
heck if its realy low milage id just thro on some good heads like DOVE or the like with a decent cam/springs and a wieand stealth t-chian and runn it till it starts burnin oil.no need to rebuild a good short block, mabe a oil pump to
stock 460s are great torque motors. i had one in my dually with very mild modifications, and it would smoke all four rear 35's with no problem. go to a swap meet, get a set of heads, a mild cam, intake and carb, and you are set. that was a great deal. make the best of it, and good luck.
why is everyone telling him to go find some new heads he hasn't even come back with what is on it yet??? sheeesh guys if he has D2OE heads those are second only to SCJ heads for the best factory iron available and being a 72 it could possibly even have DOVEheads on it if it's a real early build engine. and we don't even know if htats the real year.
Hey guys well i havent got the motor home yet. I spent all day today stripping out the highboy. Monsterbaby where do i find the casting number on the heads? If im not mistakin isnt it under the rockers? Ill try soon as possible to get a look and see what heads i have.
nope, casting number is in plain sight between the valve cover rail and the exhaust manifold
it could be a 460 too you never know until you drop the oil pan (which youd have to replace anyways to get it to fit in the truck)

Yup, head casting number is plenty easy to find, unless you have the engine in my 86, it's nowhere to be found externally on the heads on it...
These are CJ's:
