Starter Solenoid problem

My solenoid went bad this evening. Sucks because was supposed to be leaving for a camping trip in the morning. Went to advance and picked one up. Put it in and the truck started but the started kept going. had to unhook the battery.

He gave me one for a 1985 F150. He said the one for a 1984 might work better. I get home with it and read in the note that came with it.

"Do not use this solenoid for vehicles fitted with an on-board computer. Use of this solenoid for such vehicles will result in permanent damage to the EEC processor. The damaged processor can cause a rough running engine or a no start condition. Vehicles with a computer require a solenoid with suppression diodes."

The 1984 one looks closer to what came off of it than the 1985 one did. I want to try it out but I dont want to fry my processor and not be able to go camping at all. Should I wait until morning when they open back up to get another one of the first one he gave me and just get a later start than expected?

I unfortunately do not know the answer to your question, however, if you wanted to try it, i do see it is a tad bit late, but, how about you just pull the fuse for any engine management computers and try starting the truck with that solenoid. If the starter doesn't stay on, then you should have the right solenoid... honestly I don't see how a solenoid could fry the computer, but hey if it said it would fry it, there is obviously that chance.

Any chance you put the 2 big wires on the same stud on the starter?
The big wire coming form the positive post on the battery should be going to one side, along with all of the small wires. The large wire for the starter should be on the other post, by itself.

IT WILL DEFINATELY SCREW UP YOUR COMPUTER !!!!!

Switching a coil on and off (coil in the solenoid) causes tremendous voltage spikes to shoot through the system.

The diode is to suppress those spikes.

Do not use the wrong solenoid.

Thanks much! I kinda decided this anyways last night. Better to just get a late start on our trip than to fry the computer and not go at all.

I didn't know that. I changed my carbed 1985 Ford F-150 from EEC-IV/TFI ignition (feedback carb and EEC-IV computer) to the Duraspark II ignition system. I did NOT change the starter solenoid. Is that something that I should change?
