Hey guys its like 88 Degrees here and my truck will barely start. It just keeps cranking and cranking then finally starts with a ton of white smoke. Does the same thing in the winter only worse. It just started doing it about three days ago. First time I have had it happen in the summer. What do I need to look for?
Might want to check your GPR ( glow plug relay ) to make sure its putting out voltage. May also want to check the valve cover harnesses. I'm not sure but thats where I would start. Alot more knowledgeable people than me will stop by before long.
Also check your HPOP and remove the fill screw on top and check the level of the oil.. after the engine been sitting for a while.. it should be about 3/4" from the top.. If not... your check valve is maybe leaking... Not enough oil for a quick start..Without the oil, your injector are not going to work properly..
mine does the same thing and i think it is the hp oil pump if it sets for a few days it will do it almost every time but once it is started it does great all day . how many miles and a guy told me it was compresion . i pull a 28 foot car trailer and the gross is over 18 000 lbs and it will out pull 6.0s with 3k less weight so hard for me to buy the comp, bit. any info would be great.
Going by the runtime chart an oil temp of 88 degreees the Glow plugs should still energize for about 30 seconds. With all the white smoke I would start with testing the relay and then ohming out the glow plugs.
To check the relay (Next to fuel filter closest to the windshield) with key off check voltage between both of the large post and battery ground. 1 will have voltage and 1 not. have someone turn the key to on and the post that had no voltage should have voltage. if not its a bad GPR.
To ohm the plugs
Disconnect the connector ay the outside of the Valve cover
Pinout
G G I I C I I G G
Ohm between "G" amd battery ground
it should be between 0.1 and 2.0 ohms. If not a plug is bad or the harness has a short
Hmm... I really don't think the glow plugs or GPR are the problem, although it certainly can't hurt to check. At 88* you should be able to just stick the key in and crank immediately, like it's a gasser. Even if the gpr is toast, and you've got no glow plug assistance, it should fire right up at those kind of temps.
mine are like 5 monthes old and the good napa ones .They where the best they had for our trucks I also have a new starter i am going to put on just have never got around to it. 500 rpm is the menimum for start i think.
My buddy thinks that mine cranks slow when its trying to start. is there any way of checking the starter?
Pull the starter and take to a Auto Part store like Auto Zone.. they will check it for free... Pulling the starter is not that hard...
I would also check your batteries.. use a hydrometer and check each cell.. and do a load test on them (disconnect each battery when doing the load test) .. again the auto parts store can check the batteries too..
When dealing with starter, batts, alt, etc.... one quick thing to check before taking anything apart is to make sure the battery cables and the one to the starter are all free of corrosion. Corrosion can make them seem like weak or dead batteries, when all they need is a clean connection.
yeah im trying to get this figured out now with good weather because in the winter the truck will only crank over for about 4 to 5 seconds and then the batts will be to deak to crank it anymore. Dont wanna experience this again this winter
I think i would put a volt meter to the batteries when idling and see if you have around 14.5 volts of charging voltage..(wait a minute or so until the GPR kicks out) Maybe you alternator is weak..
