Flywheel replacement

Well, my whole starter woes are back... this time a bit worse. Flywheel's got a couple of missing teeth, literally two. Truck still drives, luckily, ordered the flywheel earlier this week, arrives before monday. Anyways, I know I am going to need to separate the motor and trans, but I want to know what i'm going to run into. It's fairly open all around, i mean it doesn't look like finding all the bolts is going to be the end of the world. Any tricks would be great. Also, I was thinking of when the trans is separated taking the TC off and cleaning it out with kerosene [hillbilly truck buddy told me about it]. Got 114k on the clock.. probably the original trans, mated with a much better motor [400 out of a 79 250]. There isn't really anything wrong with the trans, or TC, but if I am there, ya know? Also, i've never pulled a RWD trans, i did the motor/trans in that bonneville, but it's FWD. I know I can do it, but about how long does it take? And should I grab another guy to help me out?

I would not mess with flushing the torque convertor. Look on the front of it, and it may have a drain plug. If so, you can drain it, and take the tranny pan off and change the filter, but be aware you will need over 12 quarts to fill it back up. I would not contaminate the tranny with kerosene. I would change the front seal in the tranny while you are there.

I just changed the fluid and filter <500mi ago. But it may not be a bad idea to do it again. Drain plug eh? Okay i'll look for it. I should refil the TC before I install it yes? And the pan only needed 5qts... but yes I know the TC holds a bit of fluid too. Okay no TC clean... and the tranny doesn't leak a drop, I ain't changing anything... but I am thinking of the rear main seal on the motor. I do have a bit of an oil leak and it's either the pan gasket or rear main, really haven't looked hard enough, but it's coming from the back of the motor with the PCV valve hooked up, and it comes from the timing cover PCV valve not hooked up LOL. Anyways... any other woes you think I'm going to hit?

When you disturb the torque convertor, there is a very good chance the front seal will leak. When you pull the tranny back, the torque convertor drops a little bit and puts pressure on the seal, no way to get around it. Just pull the torque convertor out and change the seal, it's not hard.

You don't have to pre-fill the torque convertor, it just increases the mess. Put it all back together, and put about 5 quarts in it, and then get it started, and keep pouring it in. A case of 12 will get you close if it's a c6.

Well folks, it's finally done. No more problems, and I'm very glad to say it's done. New flywheel, and doing your first RWD trans by yourself is stupid.. so don't try it. Got it all in back together, tightened down, ready to go, yes? Starter decides to quit on me.. alright warranty starter yeah? Craps out day one too. Finally I go there and upgrade to the next step up duralast, put it in, no problems. Finally, I turn my key and aren't afraid it isn't going to turn over.. first time in 2mo of owning the truck too LOL. Well folks, I got a good lesson here, don't use ghetto bolts to hold important stuff in, and don't go through 8 starters [yes, this is the final count] bc you are too cheap to just buy the good stuff. Junkyard [4 -$20], Valucraft [3 -$25] [may as well just call it garbage inc], then duralast [1 -$45]. Total aggrivation reduction items [ over $50] LOL. A nice day to all, because I can actually drive my ugly ford for once

EDIT: now that I read this thread, I never did get to that front trans seal or rear main seal. Dammit, never can win with this truck I guess. You were right, i can tell it's leaking, but that's the only trans leak, and I bet if I throw another bottle of lucas in there it'll take care of it lol.

Some will say you should have gone better than Duralast.
