99 no start only when cold

i posted before and i replaced my cam sensor with the new grey one. anyways i found out now that the probelm only persists when the engine is cold and not been run(mornings). well i was at country thunder last night and seh WAS NOT starting...ran the batteries down and it was 3 am and my buddy came up and messed with the ipr connector and then it fired...STILL my tach does not register while cranking until right before it fires? so i would think cam sensor still with no tach registration. ANYWAYS...i had a 97 truck before that i replaced the ipr and kept the old one...what i want to know if if cleaning my connector for the ipr DOES NOT WORK...can i put the solenoid (part of ipr with electrical connector) from my 97 truck...onto my 99..yes it is better to replace the whole ipr, but its easier for me at this point in time to just try putting a different solenoid on it. will this work ?...i took the one off my 99 (solenoid only) and compared it, they look identical...will this work if i try it or are the ipr's different?

found part number off the one from my old 97...and the 99...

97 is....1825250C91
99 is....1825249C91

I am sorry, what is IPR, what is cold? I would have gone after the glow plug relay and checked it first, but again, what is cold, where are you at?

Sorry, just went to your profile, found out IL, but what is cold? IF you dropped down to 48 ( like we did last night i hear) i would still look at the Glow plug relay. Also, just learned something other day, are you parked on incline? if so, go to level ground, try it.

does the engine smoke at all while your cranking it over? if so I'd bet on glow plug relay or bad glow plugs. just replaced all my glow plugs & what a difference.

Is it a complete no start, you are not able to start it at all right now? Or later in the day you can start it.

glow plugs and all are fine...no smoke at all when cranking OR once started..

and it barely starts when cold but once it's got temps to it..it starts fine.

i replaced the ipr solenoid from the one off my 97 and it made a difference...still could prolly use that actual ipr valve that goes into the hpop, but i just did the solenoid for now.

yah thats what i thought--but not so fast...i just started it up once again after sitting for 5 or 6 hours and at night when it's cooled off to about 70 degrees..and it cranked for a long time again...i'll the whole ipr valve and everything in it off my 97 and see if that does anything since messing with the solenoid seemed to help(or so i thought). anybody got any other suggestions?..what gets me still is that when it's cranking the tach isn't moving, but once it starts to fire the tach moves....way to odd?

by the way; anybody know where to find cheap ipr's for the 7.3?..if they even exist?

Are you sure your glow plug relay is passing current? They click but the contacts inside get so fried that nothing goes through.

Have you checked the HPOP Resevoir at cold start up to make sure it is full...1/2 inch from the top....
Does it stay running when cold?...
