From what I can find "13" is ratio 2.75, and J is the front axle code, which in this case should be a 2wd with power steering. Should be a Ford 9" axle.
Are you sure it reads 13J? 2.75 is for 2-wheel drive trucks only.
You most likely have 3.50 gears. You also may have 3.00 or 4.10 gears.
First two blocks are for the rear axle. Last block is for the front. 13 = 2.75. J = Power steering. J is the standard code if nothing else was ordered for the front axle (if applicable) like a HD front axle, roll bar, etc.
Ok, so it's definitely 2.75? I'm surprised it's geared that high.. what's the point for a 4WD truck to have 2.75 gears?
Still does alright in the mud in 4-lo but i'm definitley going to have to swap these out. Maybe I can get something for the old diffs on eBay.
I wonder if it's a non-original cab? Where is the VIN stamped on the frame so I can compare? and can I find codes on the axles themselves? tried finding information a while back before I realized I had the vin stamp on the end of the door.
Somebody has definetly re-geared that truck... there is no matching 2.75 gear for Dana 44 axles, which should be the front axle on that truck. I imagine that it was originally a 3.50/3.55 (R/F) geared truck and that the rear end went out and the previous owner just bought a junkyard axle and swapped in the ring & pinion.
You can put the truck in Neutral and jack up one side and turn the tire ten times and count how many times the driveshaft turns, make a white mark on the driveshaft for easier counting.

The Warranty (VIN) Plate AXLE code reads 13, which translates to 2.75-1, in the 1973/79 Ford truck parts catalog in two locations. One in the general info section under axle codes, the other in section 40 = rear axle section.
But the Warranty (VIN) Plate may be incorrect, someone swapped doors and didn't change the plate.
On the rear axle itself, on one of the bolts that holds the carrier to the housing will be at least one Ford ID tag. Looking straight at the rear end from the front, the tag usually is placed at 5 o'clock. Don't be surprised if it's missing.
FRONT AXLE TAG LOCATION: On one of the bolts that holds the cover to the housing, or on the right side of the housing bolted to the housing itself. This tag is approx 2" long by 1/2" high. The axle code & ratio, or a 7 digit number like 306000-1 will be listed.
The rear axle code will not be found in the 11 digit VIN itself, only under the AXLE code listed on the Warranty Plate. Compare the VIN on the door with your registration.
>> Ford used different ratios at the rear than what the front uses, but ONLY upon receiving the request on a special order. I've decoded several examples of this oddity on FTE (Dana 60 rear/Dana 44 front). Both times, the rear was 4.56, the front was 4.10. <<
How many digits is your DSO code? 2 is the usual, 6 denotes a special order.

I thought he was giving the axle tag info. I know that I have mis-matched parts on many of my trucks (except for the '72)
No Dana axle gearset in 67-79 matched the 9" rear. They were like 3.00/3.07 ; 3.50/3.55 ; 4.09/4.11
Matt, the axle code on the Warranty (VIN) Plate is 13J. The J refers to the front axle having power steering. 9 inch rear axle tags have either a code like WDM-H or C5TA-AA. Sometimes the ratio was listed, sometimes it wasn't. If the axle had LS, there was a separate tag with just an L on it.

You are right Bill... although I haven't seen one without at least part of the ratio listed, and never seen a seperate tag with an L, although the ratio on the tag would have an L mixed in, ex. 2L75 ; 27L5 ; or most commonly 275L.
