Cool Gas milege

I just bought another Ford truck, 2003 with a 4.6 engine. I just checked my milege and it cam to 10.1 mpg. I don't hodrod it. Does any one have any suggestions to what to look for? All I've done so far is put a K+N filter on it.
Thanks

I have been getting 17-18 on the insterstate with my 01 5.4l SuperCrew.. and 19-20 with my 99 4.6l at 60 mph... check the plugs. Also how do you check your gas milage.

Could be bad O2 sensors, these engines are not very fuel efficient by any means but yours is down right crappy.

I fill it up, drive it a couple of hundred miles, both highway and city, fill it back up and divide how many miles by how many gallons. I'm gonna check the plugs and my inlet sensor this weekend. I know somethings wrong my 76 supercab with a 390 gets 15 mpg. And I don't baby it.
Thanks

My 2003 5.4 SuperCrew FX4 4x4 gets 9.8-10.8 in the city and 15 mpg on the highway. When it was brand new,, the best that I got in the city was 11.2 mpg. I've tried everything, new plugs, have the oxygen sensors checked, they are ok, engine & throttle body fogs, Amsoil oil and filter, etc. My son is a Ford mechanic and keeps it in top condition. These trucks are big heavy beasts with a thirsty attitude. But boy do I love mine, and I would not trade it for anything else.

Driving style makes all the difference.... I have friends that think they drive easy and they really dont... just because it aint to the floor dosnt mean your not still using more fuel than you need... Now that i have my edge i can watch what im doing vs the IMPG and it lets me taylor my driving to keep the IMPG as high as i can...

Just my .02

I also have a '99 F150 with a 4.6 L engine. I'm lucky if I get 10 mpg in the city and +/- 14 mpg on the highway. I recently changed two of my oxygen sensors, atf fluid, oil, plugs & wires. I also will try to drive it more conservatively.

If that doesn't help, I don't know what will???

No, that is way low, especially for a 4.6. My 01 OFFROAD 4x4 with a 5.4L, 3.55 gears gets 13 to 14 in town and about 16 on the hwy.

My 1999 4x4 SCAB 4.6 only gets 14 on the highway on a good day. It's more like 11-12 in the city. I only have 74,000 miles on it and I baby it. It is not my daily driver due to this issue alone, but I still love my TRUCK...

ok first things first. do you know what gears you have in the truck 3.55 4.10 3.73? ok does the truck have a stock muffler on it. ok my 4.6l get 17-18 around town and 18-20 on interstate. at 155,000 ,miles i was getting like 14-15. i change all my plugs and wires and put a sheild on the wires. use autolight plugs. i changed the pcv and all the fuilds in my drive tran. use syn oil. i saw a big differance when i did this. also check for drag in your wheel bearings and drive line you might need an alinement to. ps i get that milage running 15w-40 rotella-t so that really go being thats why the 5w-30 is here to so say get you better gas milage. haha i don't like five weights. 10s are ok in my book.run some lucas injecter cleaner in it this to will help and not hurtt the injecters alot of other will so watch what you use. good luck
