Something isn't right for your 4.6. I have a 97 F150 4.6 auto Scab 4x4 3.55 and get 15-16 mixed driving and I just got back today from a trip to southern MN. I put 225 miles on the truck and used only 1/2 a tank from the day I left to when I got back. On the highway I'll get between 18-21, depending on my speed. I have 204,200 on the truck.

On the way down I did 65 the whole time and on the way back it varied from 60-75 following the same route.

A number of questions, thanks for your input......

How can I check out which gears that I have?

Which ones are better/ worse for gas mileage?

Is it possible and "healthy" for the vehicle to change the gears?

If it is, how can it be done?

I have the 5.4 and I get 16 city and 19 -20 highway. I drive mostly highway and my city driving isn't really city driving like most of you think about city driving.

F150 Mileage

I just changed the plugs and the wires, transmission fluid and oil & filter. I took a trip to the cabin (about 130 miles each way) and averaged 16 mpg about half highway/ half country roads, a lot of hills in the country.

How can you identify the gear ratio in the differential (yours is 3.55)?

Is a higher or lower gear ratio better for gas mileage? ajbieler (below, 7/21/07 @ 12:25 )says that 3 are available (3.55, 4.10, 3.73). My gut instinct tells me that a higher gear ratio should be better for gas mileage (i.e. rear wheels turn 3.55 times for each 1 engine revolution????)

Thanks for the input!

Take a look on the drivers door jam and look under axle it will either have a number or a number and letter ie: 19, H9. Post it here and we can identify what gears you have.

Lower gears will give you better city milage and maybe .5-1mpg less on the highway. Lower gears are actually better because the motor doesn't have to work as hard to get the truck moving.

Under "AXLE" on the driver's door tag is "19". The next letters are "TR" and under that is "U". The rest of the letters on top/ bottom are "SPR/AN" and "9VNAA/E" The entire sequence looks like this:

W8/139 BMC/C "INT TR"/M2 R/9 AXLE/19 TR/U SPR/AN 9VNAA/E

Thanks for the input!! Let me know if I can relay any other info.

You have 3.55 open differential and a 4R70W transmission.

my milage was bad ,truck ran fine, but weak.I checked my tps,it checked bad under acceleration.replaced tps ,now I get 17cty 22hwy more power. 1997 4.6 3.55gears 4r70w trans 4wd 85000 miles sc. pulls my 3000lb boat a lot better at 14-15 mpg.old mpg -11with boat,14cty,17 hwy,at best, sometimes worse.I hope everyone with these trucks will check their tps, seems to me to be a lot of peoples problem after replacing a lot of parts and spent $. tps fomoco-60.00$-advance-30.00$ HOPE this helps.
