on my 06 escape, the passenger airbag works off a sensor in the seat to determine if the airbag needs to be on or off. my question. if it's off shouldn't the light stay lit while it's running?? mine comes on for a few seconds when i crank it up and i'm by myself, then it goes out and stays out. is this how it's supposed to work?? i thought it should stay lit. i want to know if it's working right or i need to take it to the dealer before my warranty is out. thanks for any help.
I would take it to the dealer to get checked out. One thing you should do is make sure the senser connector under the seat has not come loose. My gals 2003 Escape had this similar problem. The dealer first diagnosed it as her having her purse on the seat while driving to work cause the light to come on. I thought that eplanation was FUBAR. Crawled around and found a loose connection and it has been fine ever since. So much for Ford Factory Trained Techs

This is actually correct operation. If the seat is not occupied and the seatbelt is not fastened then the light will come on to tell you the circuit is working then go out. The light is intended to come on (and stay on) only when you would expect the airbag to be armed but for some reason it isn't. For example, if you have a child in the front seat the sensor will see that weight as possibly someone who is too short for the airbag and the light will illuminate. Half the time when my wife is in the passenger seat the light comes on - she weighs just over 100 pounds.
