Howdy...newb here

Just bought me an 84 ranger for $600, and absolutely love it to death. It doesn't have a radio, no a/c, no muffler so it sounds like a diesel (or a dream if you will), the glove box don't work, the pass. door don't work, the tailgate don't work, and it looks like a total piece of dookie..

The question is...

Why would I rather drive this truck, and think this truck is more fun the drive than any of the cars I've owned in the past (including my 01 passat that i still have)? Could it be its carbeaurated? The relaxed feel of it on the road knowing you can't zip in and out of traffic that adds to the stress? Could it be the fact that I dont' have to worry if someone dings the "uncle jesse" (as i've dubbed it)...maybe the biggest thing is NO PAYMENTS! I don't have a clue...but i tell you what..it might have been the best $600, i ever spent...oh, and it runs like a dream!

I'll probably be around a bunch because I'm sure it'll probably break down...I've worked on carbed bikes a bunch, but a truck is something that will be new to me Looking forward to it gents!

lol was that the XL Dookie trim level they offered in 84?

welcome, and I understand the way you feel. Is there no muffler at all or is there a big hole? That should probably be addressed. The engine is probably the 4 plug version of the lima 2.3, which is a very durable 4 cylinder motor. I had a 94 ranger for a short time before I acquired my present 86 f-250 and it was a solid little truck, would love it if I still had it.

It's the 2.8L V6 engine...the pipe was sawed off by some dumb dumb who owned it before me. I plan on trying to fix the passenger door and the tailgate...maybe the A/C but other than that...probably just routine maintenance.

Do you know how much the 84 ranger gas tank holds because the guage doesn't work...speaking of which, I probably need to fix the oil pressure guage.

Thumbs up

Well as stated the best thing is no payments. That being said we move on to the other reasons. You can dog it, if that be your choice, If it gets banged up a little - so what. It's all really psy. [ in your head]. The first truck I ever owned was [gulp- I hate to admit it ] a 66 stepside straight 6 chevy. It looked like crap but ran like a singer sowing machine and I prue did love that old truck. You couldn't hurt it on a bet. Well I did kinda blow the rings out of it pulling my 69 Cougar from Arkansas to Alabama, but what the hey I put a couple quarts of oil in it everyday and still drove it another month or so before I sold it. So Enjoy your new toy, nothing like your first [I take it this is] truck.
