My dad and I have a yellow 70 Superbird. It packs the original 440 4V, 4 spd, and 3.54 Dana rear.
It also has dealer installed add on air conditioning. I was wondering just how many of these were built with dealer installed a/c. I haven't been able to find any info on this. Oh and my dad's only the second owner. He's had it since '78. It only has 72k miles on it and it's all original. It has the original Magnum 500's. Are Superbirds originally equipped with Magnum 500's rare? Seems all of the 'Birds have Rallyes.
Absolute garbage...............dude, I'll come and trailer that POS off your hands at no charge to you. I'm only offering because I feel for people who get screwed buying these old dinosaurs.
yay more peple asking about Mopar musclecars (my specialty)
unfortunantly, back in the day, few to no records were kept on how many cars were equiped with AC. However you may be able to get an estimant from a club that has a large number of Superbird owners registered and use a proportion to estimate. use equation:
number in club with AC / total in club = (unknown #) / total superbirds produced
then just solve the proportion and you'l have a decent guess.

Magnum 500's were an available option on the superbird, with Rallyes being standard as they were on the road runner, so once again there is no sure way to tell how many cars had the Magnum 500's. even though plymouth had 2000 orders for superbirds, when they arrived on lots, few buyers showed up, and superbirds sat on lots for months at a time because no one wanted them, and ive heard of dealers removing Mags to put on more popular cars and replacing them with the standard Rallyes. so it all depends on how many of those original 2000 were ordered with mags, and then not stripped by dealerships. (eventually 1,971 superbirds were reported sold, the rest were usually taken by dealers when no one else would buy them, and one unluckey one was burried by tree huggers on earth day at the Berkley University Campus in California in 1970)

Don't bother because this thing is staying here with me until the day I die. I don't mean to be rude, DOHC.

So is it still down there or is it long gone? I'd like to know more about that one. I know the whole Daytona/Superbird story. I'm a Ford guy at heart, but I really love Mopars too.
Plymouth built only 58 Superbirds with 440 and 4 speed, but I have no idea how many of them had a/c.
Got any pictures of Superbird?
Don't you mean 58 Superbirds built with the 426 Hemi and 4 spd? If you mean 440's, you are way off mark. I have a set of pamphlets from a old club in the early 80's that have the drivetrain production numbers.
440 4V 4 spd-458
Auto-626
440 3x2 4 spd-308
Auto-408
426 8V 4 spd-58
Auto-77
I need to get a digital camera and set up a gallery with pics of the 'Bird. It'll take me a while.
I have many books about muscle cars, but the latest one I got is Standard Catalog of American Muscle Cars 1960-1972.
It's kinda confusing because it has two separate columns. One said 466 had 440 and 4 speed, other said 58 had 440 and 4 speed. It's probably error (I found many errors in this book).

thats because there were two 440 options, the 440 4bbl, and the 440 "6 Pac" (three 2bbl carbs) so naturally the numbers vary. the 440 4bbl was standard.
And as far as i know that superbird is still down there, but who knows, it seems like a step in the wrong direction for the tree huggers burying a car full of oil, gas, antifreeze, and battery acid, i doubt that thats good for the enviroment...
I meant to said that there are two columns for 440 and 4 speed. There was separate column for six pack. No column for 426 Hemi. I didn't notice that until today.
I read so many stories about Superbird and how it was built to bring Richard Petty back to Plymouth, I really didn't feel like reading another one, so until today I didn't even notice that they made an error.
Sales of Superbird were pretty good. Plymouth sold 1,920 Superbirds in 1970 which is a lot higher number than Ford sold Torino Talladegas and Dodge sold Charger Daytonas.
godblessmud- No 1970 Plymouth Superbird, or 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, came equipped with factory installed air conditioning. Why- because of the limited grille opening and the obvious concerns about overheating. On the Superbird, the opening was under the nose cone, on the Daytona it was a small grille right on the front of the nose cone. Chrysler deleted A/C as an option on all the winged cars, plus no A/C on Hemi or 440 6 BBL cars because with the multipe carbs, there was no room for the RV2 A/C compressor.
