has anybody put synthetic oil in 6.4l yet. any difference, what brand and viscosity. i am looking to use 5w40 syn. used amsoil 15w40 in my 6.0l, ran great, and quicker starts.
I think amsoil is the only syn. cj4 on the market. I'm going to change next week and then head to Los Angeles. I will let you know if I see any difference. By the way I'm putting 5w40 amsoil in. JB
Please tell me if I have been told wrong. A diesel tech at the local Ford dealership here told me the 6.4 comes from the factory with synthetic oil. He says thats all they use for them. Was he just appeasing me? or lying straight out? some of his reasons sounded good, but cant find any definitive proof. Thanks in advance
rednek, I'm planning to do the same thing and possibily include installing a by pass oil filtration system as well. I'll wait until I get my free oil change @5000 miles though like you. It's said the engine needs the friction to set. So no sythetic until after 10,000 miles.
ssharber: I checked with two different local dealers here in Vancouver, BC. I was told by both that the 10W-30 viscosity CJ-4 oil is used by Ford here, XO-10W30-OSD, part number. It's in a red plastic bottle.
Another issue is that the add level on the Engine Coolant Expansion Tank is too high so coolant has been bubbling out of my Expansion Tank. The Diesel Tech told me Ford should have set it lower on the tank and there will likley be some sort of adjustment coming to deal with this as it's common on most 6.4's. Has anyone else here noticed this problem?

I had that problem. My cap seemed to not be on tight, so I thought that was the problem. The tank was pretty low when I noticed the overflow residue, so I filled it to the "cold high" mark (which is actually near the top of the tank, where you'd think a "full hot" mark should be). It's been a couple of weeks and I haven't had any overflow, but I haven't been doing any towing or anything.

RP is not CJ4 rated. May not hurt, but my dealer is insistant on CJ4
heard this before!!! nOT A PROBLEM!! you wont be sorry! dealer wants your money thats all !!
Facts are facts. CJ4 oil is required in the new engine. Has additive package to help control soot due to increased egr. Ford could actually void your warr. in any oil related failure. Not trying to argue, just want everyone to know the facts.
Blue- the dealer said its fine. Also, royal purple customer service issued the okay, with ford . So, royal purple and mobil 1 are okay! Dealers gave the okay. Ford will not void warranty, just ask your local dealer....

So as not to be argumenative this will be my last post on this subect. Please understand, you can put sand in your engine if you want to. I just want to make sure everyone understands what is at stake here. I talked to Dave who is in charge of customer service at RP. He said at this time they do not have an oil approved for the 6.4 and probably will not. He said he personally did not think the CI4 oil would hurt but still not approved by Ford. My dealer said CJ4 period. Lots of luck with your truck, Hope you are enjoying it as much as I am enjoying mine.
PS I own 18 wheelers and Cummins and Detroit also say nothing but CJ4 in the new engines.
i has used amsoil for years, and i will most likely use their 5w40. i have used mobil 1 and castrol syntec in gas engines with good success. until the oils are rated cj4, i think i am going to use amsoil, if the are any problems with the engine i can bring them the bottle and prove it is cj4.

Not wanting to rain on anyones parade, but currently the only manufacture producing a "5W-40 API CJ-4 Certified" synthetic motor oil is Mobil (Mobil 1 Delvac ESP). The rest of the "API CJ-4 Certified motor oils currently available are either 10W-30 or 15W40 oils and are not synthetics. http://eolcs.api.org/FindBrandByServ...eCategory=CJ-4
The Amsoil 5W-40 oil is Not "API CJ-4 Certified", in fact it is Not "API Certified" at all, contrary to what Amsoil would like you to believe.
As for Mobil 1, Standard Mobil 1 Trubo Diesel Truck 5W-40 and Mobil Delvac 1 5W-40 are only API CI-4+ Certified.
It appears that "Mobil 1 5W-40 ESP" has obtained "API CJ-4 Certification", however it is just becoming available on the market and may be difficult to locate for awhile. http://eolcs.api.org/DisplayLicenseI...LicenseNo=0020
Hope this helps
