English speakers

I just learned that India has the largest population of English speaking people.

Can you believe that?

I have my doubts when using many companies' India based help lines. It's a bit like
using voice recognition software.

They may speak it in the most basic sense of the word. My company has an office over there, just try calling and being able to hold a understandable conversation, 90% of the time it can't be done.

Yes they speak English but combined with the extremly heavy accent and the incorrect usage of words and email ends up being the best way to "talk"

You are probably right. But I was talking quantity, not quality. I found it surprising.

It may be true. Doesn't mean I want to speak to them when I call some companies tech or service line.

It's said that english is the language of commerce. India may support that statement
in their use of it.

Legacy of the British colonial era......I forget the exact number, but I think 400 to 500 million Indians speak enough English to be considered competent in speaking the language.....(conversely....I know a little German.....but I'm most definitely NOT German speaking.....).

I heard on Michael Reagan's show that English is the official language of Kenya...

But, in America it can't even be voted on! (It just wouldn't be fair)
