I thought there may have been some distinguishing characteristic that someone could have noticed, because i dont know the difference in looks between the three.
Yes, if the choice is between 351C, 351M and 351W this engine must be the last. The C and M engines have quite different cylinder heads with the exhaust face inline with the angle of the block's "V".
The 351C was discontinued in 1974, the 351M was discontinued in the early '80s.
351w has the thermostat housing is above the water pump a good bit. its high enough to get a socket straighton it from the front. its a winsor motor looks like out of a van.
I'm thinking it's one of the Windsors as well, it has the same oil dipstick my motor has. But it could easily be a 302 or 351, hard to say with all the crap/accessories in the way. You can measure the deck height and know for sure. It will be 9.5" from crank centerline to head gasket on a 351, 8.2" on a 302.
It is a Windsor engine if it is a 351. The way to tell if it is a 302 or 351 is to spread your hand across the intake manifold from head to head. If it is a 302, your fingers will just about touch both heads. If it is a 351, there will be about a 1 1/2" gap to one head.
