Best I can tell ya is to give it a good wiggle and tug. Sometimes I use a flat head screwdriver to help separate the harness from the plug. But be careful, the under hood heat tends to make the harness a bit brittle after a few years.
Give Radioshack a try for the contact cleaner. I don't know if the aerosol spay you got would be bad or not, but I would want to get the MAF real wet.
With a felt tip pen I probably don't need to unplug the wiring to get the cleaner on. I've broken too many plastic things over the years to try and force it.
How much do you think an aerosol can of electronic cleaner will bring on ebay?
Actually, the part you need to clean is on the end of the MAF that's inside the intake. Once you get it out you should see some exposed wire(s). Those are the "sensoring" parts that you need to use the contact cleaner on. You can always spay a q-tip and use that to clean the sensor.
Those wires look awfully tiny and fragile. Are you sure a Q Tip won't break them? I sprayed some of the can on the floor of the barn and it doesn't seem to have a lot of velocity behind it. It may be more gentle than a Q TIp, but I'll go with your advice on this if you think it's ok.
I'd be less concerned with leaving fibers behind, but you will have to be careful not to apply too much pressure...but they're not made of silk either. When I cleaned the one on my '01 I took a few swipes to get the buildup off. The MAF sensor uses a hot wire sensing element to measure the amount of air entering the engine. Air passing over the hot wire causes it to cool. This hot wire is maintained at 392°F above the ambient temperature as measured by a constant cold wire.
That's the part that has me concerned. I can't see any build up (even with my glasses on) so I won't know how much wiping would be enough. That part looks so clean you would think it just came out of the plastic wrapping. We live on gravel roads, and she parks in the barn with a dirt floor and that thing looks spotless. I don't know what I'd be cleaning. Maybe I should just leave this alone, or do ya'll think I need to clean it anyway.
