Another Problem

The last time I had a problem it was 2 fuel injectors stuck open. That was less than a month ago. Today I started to experience the same problem. I plan on calling the dealership in the morning to try and get the truck in. While accelerating the truck would stumble and then the check engine light came on. It went in to limp home mode. Atleast this time I made it home. Again I got a strong smell of gas and while stopped at a stop light the truck was about to die. My concern is if it is fuel injectors again is if there is something else wrong that is causing it. I am very disappointed that a truck with 41,000 miles on it would be having these kinds of problems. What really concerns me is having a truck that i can not depend on. I don't drive the truck hard so I would not think there should be these problems. I am actually thinking about trading the truck. My other concern is that I hoped to put a CAI, exhaust, and an edge in the truck but I'm thinking that this could cause even more problems. The truck is a 2005 screw with a 5.4 and would be happy to hear any input you guys have or suggestions. I will post again once I find out what the problem is.

I would not do a thing to it untill I was sure it was fixed and fixed right! Ford is notorious for denying warranty claims for mods done to the truck. Take your time and be sure all is well before starting to mod your truck, you will be much happier in the long run!

If it turns out to be stuck injectors again, I would start to wonder whether the fuel you're using is causing the problem or the whole lot of injectors you got from the factory are just cr@p.

If it's different injectors sticking, and they only replaced the stickers last time, I'd be telling them to replace the whole lot this time. If it's any of the same injectors, I'd be real suspicious of your fuel supply and/or the contents of the fuel tank.

Stuck injectors are certainly nothing new to these engines, but your case seems extreme. I wonder if something like Lucas UCL can help prevent the sticking or not.

Well I jsut got a call from the dealership and the problem is the catalytic converter. It is on the same side as the injectors that went bad. They think that the as a result of the injectors being stuck open it fluided the catalytic converter. On the plus side the repair will be covered under the warrenty on the catalytic converter for 8 yrs or 80,000 miles. Atleast I don't have to pay for this one. Thank you for the input.

Thanks for the update.

Does a plugged cat explain the smell of gas you experienced on the second episode? I'm trying to wrap my head around that, and it seems a bit fishy to me, but I hope for your sake that a new cat fixes it.

I also would have thought a stuck injector would call for an almost automatic replacement of any downstream cat(s).

Have you replaced your fuel filter yet. With 41,000 miles on her if you haven't done it yet I would do it. It may have a problem and allowing debris to pass jamming open the sileniod.

I had the fuel filter replaced when the two fuel injectors stuck open. That was at 40,000 miles. As far as other problems when I talked with the dealership then I asked if there may be some other problems. They told me that the only code that came up was for the cat but would run some other tests once the cat was replaced. It never crossed my mind that there could be a problem with the cat as a result of the fuel injectors stuck open. Not exactly the best way to learn something but like I said atleast i don't have to pay for the cat. I have been using gas from Murphy USA (walmart) since it is the cheapest. Wondering if this could have contributed to the original problem. I was told that it will take 2-3 days for the new cat to get in. So I should now more by then. Thank you again for all of the ideas.

You live in Michigan, the heart of the auto industry, and they can't get you a part for 2 to 3 days? That's like living in Iowa and waiting a week for corn on the cob. I'd ask them to harvest one off the lot so I wouldn't be without a car.

Well I talked with the dealership today and come to find out the #1 fuel injector is sticking open. So now I will have replaced the Number 1,3, and 4 fuel injectors. This seems pretty weird to me. I was talking the the manager of the service department and he said that he has had to replace a few fuel injectors on a few 2005 F150s. He was saying that there was a bad batch of fuel injectors put into these trucks. If so shouldn't ford be replacing these free of charge. I am thinking that I should have all of the injectors replaced since three have gone bad. Also I was told that the O2 sensor needs to be replaced. But like I said before on the plus side I don't have to pay for the cat.

As to the first part of your questions - it sounds like you had a mechanical failure due to bad parts (injectors) and are now working through the aftermath of that (bad cat and O2 sensor) adding a CAI and Edge shouldn't make these issues any worse or make the truck any less reliable than it is now.

There was another member who just posted of his experience with stuck open injectors and I posted on his thread, but to say it here as well. If you had stuck open injectors and drove the truck for any length of time, I'd be really surprised if the cat didn't suffer some damage. Dumping in so much raw fuel can easily melt the ceramic substrate - at least a little bit. Trouble is, once it starts to melt, that forces the exhaust gas through a smaller portion of the cat, which puts more 'load' on that area and gets it hotter which can cause additional melting...and so it.

To me, replacing a couple of injectors is like replacing a couple of spark plugs. They have all seen the same duty cycle, fuel, and associated conditions, so if one or two have failed, likely others might as well. I would definitely press the dealer for replacement of the entire injector set based on those grounds.

I think I've been there...it almost cost me a fortune when I have to replace both my Alfa Romeo catalytic converter and oxygen sensor...I do hope you won't be relpacing yours, let it be checked by your mechanic asap before any damage errupts...Good luck...
