I need to replace engine and want to find one at a local salvage yard. But having a difficult time finding one with low miles, reasonable price around the years of '97-'99 out of a van. On the other hand I can find a fair amount of '00 and later engines
I hear that the 4.2 has gone through so changes over the years and I am being told that you are only able to use the years of '97-'99 because of intake differences. Would I be able to swap my older intake onto a newer engine. Or will the be more issues that need to be addressed
I can't say for certain, but I don't think the intake alone would be a show stopper. I think the 05 was the first year they went to electronic throttle control. I believe all earlier model years had traditional cable actuated throttle body.
There have been 2 or 3 different intake setups in the pre-05 models. I'd guess, but don't know for sure, that any of them could be made to work, but might require some tinkering.
For example, my 2000 had the dual runner intake setup and used an Intake Manifold Runner Control system that engines without that intake did not use.
Best of luck - hope you can get back on the road without a lot of money and frustration.
