Question about plug wires...

How much can they affect milage? Also, can they be the cause of engine knock? I know rough idle can be caused by a bad wire(s).

I consistently get 13mpg no matter how hard or easy I drive. I gave a coworker the symptoms and he said that he tought it may need a valve job. Seems a little young to need one already. I know you can't really diagnose over the internet. just looking for some pointers.

Here's what I can tell you.

Milage sucks
engine knock (REALLY bad in cold temps) but sounds more like it's valve noise.
no low end power (if I'm already it highway speeds, I can give it gas and it reponds pretty good).

I'm going to buy the wires at lunch today and replace. Just wanting some more pointers. I don't know much about these "newer" engines but could this be a timing issue? I know with my old '79 Monte Carlo I could move the distributor until the engine ran good, top and bottom end. This thing, not so much. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

hi, there is no adjustment needed as the timing is set by the computor. the wires are a good starting point with any of the problems you have. let us know how things work out. bokker.

Agreed. If plug wires have never been changed, they are due and can cause driveability issues.
I'd go ahead and change plugs too.

Suggestion: stay with Motorcraft wires (and plugs).

No CEL codes I assume or you'd likely have mentioned them.

Passed inspection this morning. I was hoping it would fail and give me somewhere to start (autozone wouldn't hook a computer up to it because they asked if the CEL was on and I said no). I bought the wires. Will be changing them out before I leave to go home. I'll see what the drive home is like.

Could wires affect mpg without throwing a code? I would have thought I would have gotten a misfire reading this morning.

Ended up having to change them after I got home. Took it for a drive afterwards and it seems to be running good. Did not hear the knocking/tapping I heard before. Power seemed to be back to where I would expect it to be. Looks like it was just old wires.

Well, engine is still running a little rough at idle and the knock is still there. don't know why I didn't hear it yesterday. Anyone know what else I could look for? I just changed the oil (motorcraft 5w30). Any help/ideas are really appreciated.

Oh yeah, who at Ford dreamed up these dang air muffler things on the air intake canisters?

Exclamation

When were the plugs changed last? Fuel filter? Ever cleaned the throttle body? All these can help improve the idle and gas mileage. Also,if the IAC is dirty it will cause a rough idle.
