Black smoke

I know that these trucks are diesels and you will get black smoke sometime or another but every day? Every take off from a dead stop (normal take off, not stomping it)? Every time I get on the go pedal to pass somebody? What could be causing this?

The truck is stock, it's a 2006, I'm running bigger tires (37's) but have always been running the same tires, it has 26000 miles on it.

Thanks

My 2007 stock F-250 xlt cc only puffs smokes when I jump on the pedal running b-10 approx. When I was running straight diesel it puffed smoke right off the dealer lot under normal acceleration. 2600 miles so far.

The company truck I drive, a stock 2006 F-550 5200 miles approx. puffs smokes every time I accelerate no matter what.

I would say puffing smoke under normal/hard acceleration would be normal and should stop after you have reached your desired speed.

I'am certainly not an expert, just my experience with the two trucks I drive.

Some black smoke from accelleration is normal. Have you changed your fuel filter and checked your air filter for obstructions. You're down where it's NORMALLY hot and very dusty so your filter life will be shorter, but the stocker will take LOTS of dirt. Your bigger tires also cause a bigger load on the engine and the computer is commanding more fuel to get you started and it takes the air system/ turbo a bit to catch up. Think about it like this......Your injectors sit right in the cylinder. You mash the go pedal and the injectors are squirting fuel just a hair before the turbo can cram enough air in to burn it all. Since air has to go from turbo to intercooler back to engine it takes just that split second to get a little more fuel than there is air to burn it--hence the puff of black smoke. If you're blowing a steady stream of smoke under accel. then you have another problem of some kind.

Black Smoke is extra fuel. You really see it on thost trucks at the tractor pull, they dump so much fuel in the engine there is plenty of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1KJJssia9Y

You said that you had an aftermarket air cooler on it, what if the engine isnt tuned for this cooler air, you will have cooler air in the chamger and not all the fuel will burn. Also, if the EGR is unplugged or not working the air will be cooler, burn may not be compleate, black smoke. You could also have allot of soot in the exhaust system from not pulling or driving like a grandma.

People on this site say that you have to get on it every once in a while to burn off the soot. Get a trailer and do 90 on the turnpike for an hour or so... It may be just a dirty turbo.

I pull 9000 lbs. every other day! I drive like I stole it so it definetly is not that. The only reason I asked this question is because I never noticed it before, I took the truck in for white smoke blowing out of the exhaust but that was fixed (bad egr cooler) now because of that I keep looking for somke but all I see is the black smoke. Maybe I just need to get used to it again.

Thanks for the replys!

possibly a sticking egr valve & or VGT actuator as this will affect boost levels & can cause a excessive amount of smoke, whats your boost look like? have you noticed a drop in low end power?

Diesel Kleen is supposeed to fix black smoke or decrease it. Plus it has lots of other benefits.

boost is normal, it goes up to 30psi without a problem. Maybe the egr valve? Who knows, I'll take it back in and see what they tell me. Before that though I will use diesel kleen and see what happens!

I am located in south central Kansas, truck has 66k on it now, bought it used (previous owner pulled with it a lot). Truck barely blows black when I put the pedal to the floor hard. Normal driving, if it is puffing it is too small an amount to see in the mirror. Only time I ever see it puff is when I romp on the pedal to blow the cobbwebbies out. I do use diesel kleen in mine though. I dump half of the small bottle in with every tank. Not much technical assistance, but gives you and idea of how truck acts in my area of the world.

I just noticed that my truck is blowing black on take off and brisk acceleration also accompanied with severe lag. I unplugged the EGR valve and prestola, the lag went away and so did the back smoke. The only issue now is my boost is limited to 20lbs instead of the normal 27+. Im not too sure why.

Try unplugging the vavle....

I will try that today and let you know the result.

Does this mean that the egr valve is not working???
