I think i remember hearing about an alternative taht raised it up higher so it didnt rub on the roof of the truck. I wanna say it was an expedition, some searching on here iwl probably pull up a few old threads.
I remember reading that too. If my memory serves me right, the expedition roof rack crossmembers fit on the excursion's tracks but they need to be widened. Somebody here has done it, and hopefully they will chime in soon.
If you want direct bolt on stuff, I would check with yakima. I believe they sell crossmembers and stuff that will fit the excursion.
Imho, the X is so tall though using the roof rack at all is kind of a PITA. I would just get a small trailer lol.
i agree about the pita thing...i just got a small trailer. the only downside is that the trailer looks so pitiful being pulled by the ex. i wonder how the bars were widened?
I think they got 3 or 4 expedition bars and cut sections out of 1 or two to widen the ones the ended up using? I wanna say they were welded together but im wondering about how the arch would look, im picturing a screwed up looking mcdonalds arch or something!
My buddy owns a fabrication shop and he may be able to do something if enough people were interested?
Here's an email reply I received from "Landyot"... maker of the awesome radius rods...
I retained the longitudinal rails bolted to the roof of the X. The entire OEM Excursion crossbars were discarded (actually, I sold them on eBay). I bought two pair of model year 2000 Explorer crossbars (4 total) on eBay, and used the Explorer “end towers” and the transverse “crossbar tubes” that are screwed at each end to each tower. I determined the length I needed to add (I think it was 2-9/16”) <O</OI unbolted the Explorer crossbar tubes from their towers. Then I made eight (8) steel inserts (one for each end of each crossbar tube) that I ground to fit inside the crossbar tubes and inside the towers (airfoil shape with a step). Drilled and tapped for two #8 stainless steel machine screws to attach the inserts to the tubes, and again to attach the inserts inside the towers. Making those inserts was way too much work … took hours to grind the shape I needed. If I had to do it again, I would cannibalize a crossbar tube so I could cut it into 2-9/16” lengths, then have those stub-piese welded to one end of each crossbar tube (they’re aluminum).<O</O I hope thiswas aclear explanation for you.
I've seen pics of his handy work and the 4 bars he made look awesome and do the trick!!! I've searched ebay for Explorer crossbars...they are amost always available.
ever considered one of those little baskets that plugs into a reciever hitch? I don't know if they are compatible with the rear barn doors, but they are certainly easier to access and probably cheaper too. Just an idea I just thought of.
I took off all of my roof crossmembers (except for one) I use the one remaining to hold down my CB antenna (102" whip mounted on back bumper) when I go in parking garages lol. ( I tied a small loop of string to the hole in the little screw part of one of the small bars, and I just feed the antenna through the loop.
But to be honest, (I know I'll catch flack for this) I didn't see any real scratching issues from my roof bars, and I have a 2000 X that lives in texas and parks outside all day and all night. Apparently, some have issues with scratching, but mine were fine until guys on the forum scared me into taking them off haha
Yea I need to work on a set of new cross bars. I took my old ones out last week while washing the truck. Two things I found out. 1. under the bars were freak'n nasty with dirt and debris that can't get out because they basically sit on the roof. 2. My rattles and bangs have decreased since removing the bars. I guess they were slapping against the roof over bumps and such.
I went on and ordered a Thule set of "feet" and crossbar kit. 3 piece kit. Little feet that fit in the stock slide. Then there is an elevated clamping device that you attach to the crossbars that snaps in and out of the feet. Sits up nice and high. They are noisy, so I am going to remove them when not in use. You can attach all kinds of accessories to the crossbars. I got them from "Rack Attack".
BTW, mine had significant roof scratching. I wish I had taken them off sooner.
You can buy a kit the fits on top of the excursion from a company call Yakima. Web site is www.yakima.com They make great stuff and I have had there system on some of my other cars and suvs. I have a brand new set of crossbars for my 2005 Excursion if someone is interested in buying them. I live in Ohio but travel alot.
I've always wanted the Yakima but never wanted to drop the cash, so it just dawned on me that the expedition racks may work. Sounds a lot easier to just buy 'em, though. Thanks for the help.
