I have a 1985 F150 with a 4.9 six and it runs pretty rough like it is missing on a cylinder... I found the firing order here on the forum. I went to check on the truck and sure enough wires 3 and 2 were swapped... (here is the strange part) when I swap them to the correct order (153624) it won't start at all and I get compression through the carb... Anyone?!?!?
Compression thru the carb indicates a valve is open on the compression stroke. That would mean the cam was installed incorrectly. Was this truck running good before and just developed this poor running?
Well, maybe I am not describing the "compression through the carb" well... it WAS running "pretty well" before I changed the wires, plugs, cap and rotor and then it ran as if it were "missing"... I checked the firing order and noted that it was wrong on the truck, but when I changed it, it wouldn't start at all and there was "discharge" (sounds like a personal problem) from the carb so I changed the plug wires back and it runs, but rough... I have not checked the timing so I will try that today, it has a new cat so I wouldn't think it was a plugged cat... my concern this truck was given to me by a friend and he said that this was a rebuilt engine and he specified that it was from Mexico (not sure if all rebuilts come from Mexico or not) but then I thought that maybe this engine had a different firing order... I am going to check the wires (they were cheap), the coil, and make sure that it is firing on the power-stroke today.... I will also check the timing...
Thanks for your help!
i hada simeler issue when i hav the dizy in wrong and yes it will run 180 out to i have done it it. it will mis cough and choke but it will run but in his case i thing he is just a cog or two off. have you checked that yet
No, I went out and bought another timing light to see how close I am... I also bought a new coil just on the off chance I am not getting enough fire...
Thanks for your help!
No, I had a buddy come over and we figured it out... I bone-headed it by checking CCW instead of checking CW on the cap and two of the plug-wires were swapped... we replaced the coil, switched the plug-wires, set the mixture on the carb and set the timing and it is running better than ever... Thanks to everyone for their suggestions... I just need to learn how to tell time... LOL
Yeah... I felt pretty stupid, but I made myself feel better by telling myself I was just really tired... that is funny, it is the first mistake I made too! LOL
