Hi everyone...so since I got my 86 f150 it's been a battle to figure out whats been causing this rough idle. In the prosess I found lots of things wrong but nothing seemed to smooth her out. Tonight I worked the late shift, got home well after dark, parked in the driveway, turned off all the lights and poped the hood. Low and beholed I stood there and watched. I could see sparks from every plug, sparks running from the plugs to the cap along the wires! It was like a disco light show. So I ask...where do I go from here? New cap? wires? rotor? Is it a bad ground? It sure was purdy. But I'd much better have a good running truck.
Thanks for your help

ok so to night the truck was doing the same thing rough idle, surging, just like before. I did replace the wires, cap, rotor, rechecked the gap, and found 1 plug ( #6 ) had started to foul. moved that to the #1 spot so i could get at it easyer, when i change it. Any way I checked tonight in the dark, low and beholed! the light show is back. even with the new stuff!. arcing from the base of the plugs ( almost all of them ) The plugs are new I put them in maybe 3 weeks ago. there AutoLite plugs from napa. I really like this truck but it's really starting to bug me. So where do I go from here? Coil? Check the grounds? New plugs? New truck?.....
No takers uh? well i checked the engine ground..cleaned that up...tryed to clean up around the spark holes as good as i could...hoping to get a better ground on the plugs..checked all the boots.. still has a slight arc every now and again...the idle dips when ever it happends..was gonna coat the inside of the cap with some wd40 but didn't get to it...any other suggestions?
the plugs are autolite 45's
silicone wires
new cap
new rotor
timing 10* BTDC
HELP!!
and Thanks

WD repels water (it is oily), but since it is moist I would think energy would drain to the inside of the cap rather than solely to the terminal. Where did you get this idea?
It was an old trick i used to use on my '56 vw bus...spray the inside of the cap with WD40 then wipe it out with a clean rag or paper towle...it would help keep the moisture out of the cap...seemed to work well at least on that beast!...Update...ended up replacing the coil tonight..took it for a ride around town and it seemed to help...now it's starting to act like a real truck!...next up...carb rebuild...
thanks everyone for your help
