Drivers kick panel, accessible from under the hood after the inter fender is loosened.

yep its the one with 60 ish +- wires . Below to right master cylinder. loosen the center bolt remove harness . loosen 2 out bolts and the PCM will slide out. But you will have to take a few bolts out of fender well top pull it out.

Good luck LOST

i found an "engine control computer", is that the PCM? The different acronym is throwing me off...

http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...tNumber=785286

i am not advocating this retailer, just trying to confirm the correct replacment

Should be the same thing. There are about 5 different acronyms that can be used to refer to the engine computer.

i found the 60 wire plug, unbolted center of it in engine compartment, pulled it inside the cab and found it was only a plug in connector (albeit a large one). after that it was a bundle of wires going up into the dash. i don't see anything that looks like a computer, except behind the glovebox, but that looks to be the ABS module.

any other tips on where to look? it turns out this is a 93, not a 96, but i think its the same. i just dont want to order a part and found it is the EEC, not PCM

It's a long rectangular connector. Look farther down and as close to the left front fender as you can see, and you should see the computer plug there. EEC PCM ECU ECM are/were all used at some point or another by someone or another to describe the engine computer.

I think it's all just a different name for the same part. You are looking for the engine computer, right? Engine Electronic Control = EEC, Powertrain Control Module = PCM. They may have been separate devices at one time, but most of the newer stuff is all integrated into one unit. The link from the Advance Auto website is what you're looking for.
