I have a 2003 F-150 XLT STX 4W, with the 5.4. It has just under 52K on it, rarely been off road. Last night my "service eng. soon" light came on after the engine started chugging/misfiring, felt like it was running with the choke on after it was warmed up. This morning when the engine was cool, it ran fine till it heated up. I took it to the dealer for service. Just got a call from them stating "the 5th cylinder is mis-firing, and the coil and plug need to be replaced, )$275). I was incredulous at this type of failure with this mileage and questioned this, the tech told me that it was "routine maintenance". Is this a common problem ? This is my 3rd F-150 (may be my last) I got 200K relatively problem free driving from the other 2. This one has had numerous problems since day 1(complete list for those intetrested). It really irks me as I'm always on top of all scheduled maintenance, and never "beat on " my vehicles. Should I be P.O.'d or not ???
no its not exactly routine stuff...but it does happen...usually on cylinder 4 becuase the antifreeze coolant hose drips/leaks on top of it.
personally if you are even 10 percent mechanically inclined you can change it yourself.
just go buy the new COP and it takes a couple small sockets and a ratchet with a few small extensions...off she comes..and place a new one on...try going to AutoZone or NAPA and get a jobber part...save you some money as well...or if you are on warranty or something like that then maybe stick with the Ford part.
Thanks for the tips guys. Wish I came here first ! Unfortunately I have a couple other issues for them to inspect (recurring drive shaft/shifting complaint, remember the list...) and a front end clicking noise that occurs when turning left. They will not look at my other issues till this first problem is resolved. They already have the vehicle in process and I'm already driving a rental, so I'm pretty much pimped at this point.
the "Lil Louie" package is a package they put out back in 97-99(i think 99)...at some dealerships here in Canada...the dealership could choose to participate in it if they wanted to or not...the dealer my truck came from(Merlin Ford In Saskatoon) did.
on my truck is consists of the Lil Louie decals, chrome molding on the side, arizona beige paint along the bottom, brushed aluminum step bars, plastic fender flares and i think maybe my rims(not sure on that though)
it is just a promotional package Ford puts out...like you might notice some 05 F150's have Western Edition decal on the side...its the same thing...i am not sure what you guys have down there in the states)is that where you are)...but they probably had the same or a different package available at the time.
Coming from the world of 3.4L V8 SHO's this is a fairly common occurence. The COP's seem to be sensitive to heat and moisture. I bought my '02 King Ranch with the misfire present and I knew immediately what it was. First thing I did was buy 4 new COP's and replaced the rear 2 on each side plus all plugs. You can check the resistance to find the faulty one but usually discolouration of the boot gives it away. I chucked the bad one and kept the remaining 3 for future use.
