mine sucks in the 53 . flathead with what the p.o. said was a mild isky cam 3 speed and one heck of gear in the back , i'm geussing low 4's , as with p235 75 15's on it wide open i can run 50-55 tops . couple that with my harsh driving style well.........
Ok. Ok. So maybe I was a little pessemistic with the mpg's. But it does suck. maybe 12. Ive never actually calculated it. It does empty my stock '55 tank PDQ!
I just returned home from the Ozarks run in branson, MO. It was 181 mile round trip. If you have ever been in branson you know the traffic is stop and go and it takes an hour to get where you are going. I also idled (sp?) a lot at the show (only 2 Y-blocks there).
I managed 15.53 MPG even with all that. I was very pleased.
272 Y-block, holly 2100 (2 barrel), 3 speed on the column, 3.73 gears.
As far as no AC, well...as long as I was moving the cowl vent and wing glasses supplied plenty of air. I was actually cold in the mornings.
When I was stopped in traffic during the day, the heat was ferocious.
You'd be surprised how much bigger they'd have to be to make a big difference. I was just looking at going from 225/70-15's to 225/75-16's; it reduced RPM's at 65 mph by 130 RPM...It would cost more to buy new wheels and tires than to put in a new axle.
I was afraid of that but I thought I`d throw it out and see what the thoughts here were.
