Hi guys....noobie Q....I just got a 1996 F-350 5.8 liter 2x4 crew cab....how do I know what automatic tranny it has?

Do you have an overdrive button on the end of the shifter?

if it is an automatic overdrive it should be the E4OD

That label is so faded I can't tell. Is it safe to assume if I don't have an overdrive button it's a C6?

Nope. AOD never went behind the 351, at least not on the 3/4- and 1-tons. The E4OD is also an automatic with overdrive. Look under "TRANS" or "TR" on the door tag and tell us the code.

TR is G (looks like G faded though)

Fleet sales of 50 or more vehicles did offer the option of using the C6 transmission long after it was nolonger offered on the sales floor as a standard option.

So it could still be a C6 if there is no OD cancel ability.

Or someone swaped the shifter and just left the wires hanging.

Thanks for the info Jason....The shifting pattern as well as the 17 bolts tell me it's a C-6. They were last used in 96, I guess I got one of the last ones. Seems to be a good HD tranny 3 speed auto....downside is no OD though!!

And the up side is-----
1: It's not nearly as fragile.
2: It's not willing to fail because of a minor electrical glitch.
3: It's a he11 of a lot cheaper to rebuild than that E4OD P O S!

Also, if you have a C6 with the 3.08:1 rear end, you will have lower top gear rpm's than an E4OD with a 4.63:1 rear end ratio.

You do lose that super low first gear if you gear them alike for the top end rpm's, but I think the added reliability is well worth it.

Or add a Gear Vendor to your C6 (for the cost of 1 or 2 E4OD rebuilds) and have the ability to split all the gears.

I dunno, I know a guy that can rebuild one for $250 parts and labor. You have to take it out and take it to him, but that's not a bad job.
