I'm hearing a slight klunking noise coming from the front of my 02 SD when I go over bumps.Could it could be tie rod ends? it seems to come from the left side, I can twist the tie rod coming from the power streering box to the passenger side front wheel fairly easy by hand.Could this be the problem ? thanks in advance
Brian
Maybe shock gromet? Best thing to do is jack up the front end and check everything, Put your hands on the parts and see if there is movement. Just make sure the truck is on stands and be careful.
You should check out your engine mounts. I do a lot of dirt highway driving, and had a similar clunk on my old F150. I noticed that the shifter seemed to move a bit with the clunks. Turned out to be a broken engine mount.
Mine has had a slight rattle on little bumps - ended up being a loose shock mount. I also had a bigger clunk on bumps and especially when brakes applied initially - this ended up being ball joints shot.
The shock is easy to check - just grab it and see if it moves. The ball joints require you to jack up the front end and try to shake the wheel trying to change the camber. If ball joints are shot, it'll clunk.
