early 99 steering knuckle

recently my 4wd started engaging and disengaging on its own. I thought maybe it was the hubs... replaced them with warn manual. then it persisted well i got underneath and started pokin and prodding. turns out the knuckle has a seal/bearing in the back of it that mates up with the front right axle that is completely blown it. there is not bearing in it anymore. is this bearing hard to replace or should i just replace the whole knuckle? im also replacing the wheel bearing because the needle bearing was destroyed by the spinning.hanging driveshaft which will also need replacement.

Welcome to the site Jeff. By knuckle do you mean Universal Joint that's in the axle, or are you talking about the knuckle at the wheel assembly? The wheel assembly knuckle I wouldn't tackle, because it includes removing the upper and lower ball joints, brake, wheel, ETC. Plus these are hard to do damage to. Clean it up to remove all the grease, and see how bad the metal got galled up. I doubt it got it bad. If it's one of the universal joints then I'd replace the whole thing. One side of these goes bad and it'll wreck the other one, at least usually.

I had the same problem jeff with the 4/wd engaging by itself. i was told it was the shift motor. my hubs were toasted so I had warn manual hbs put on. and the transfer case motor was toasted so those were changed now it works good.
