As an alternate to greese - I've seen people use wax paper. Seems logical to me and there is no mess.

I lube my gooseneck hitch, but not my bumper hitch. With a lot of weight on the hitch you can wear out things faster. I use heavy lithium grease and so far it seems to work well and keep things quiet and lubed.
