Ok, I need help. My 2000 Excursion 5.4 liter is over heating pulling my 391xt Ranger. It never has before. I did have a minor accident 3 weeks ago, ran into the rear of a auto. Very minor damage, inspection shows no issues blocked air or air flow or hoses. I have had mine fxed.
Pulling the boat over 55 on the interstate in 3rd ( not OD) makes it get hot on any hill.
I switch on the heat, open the windows and it will cool down.
Radiator has been serviced, fluid is full and clean. Mileage is 134K.
Mechanic chaged thermostat with no improvement.
These Hills in North Alabama can get steep.
I need your suggestions.
I have never heard it roar. Never did in the past either. I have heard it on a GM product I had in the past. If it is working, and as hot as it has gotten, it should have come on.
How loud is it? Like your truck. Mine is same color.

Reason: Poor spelling
Monsta is NOT lying about the ROAR...I've had mine kick in while pulling passes in the Big Horns and Rockies...at first I thought it was an aux fan...but you almost NEVER hear the fan until you NEED it...and it does ROAR...and for me...keeps temps at bay (so far)...if you don't hear a ROAR...I'd certainly have the fan checked...
Is only the coolant temp rising or does the tranny guage move too?...if the tranny guage moves...the trans is VERY hot...and needs you to pull over now and let it idle...
I am sure the tranny is heating up somewhat. Running the heater , front and back, gets it undercontrol pretty quick. Not a long term solution. Mechanic will see it this week.
Maybe a good time to add a bigger tranny cooler too.
I'd get a gauge first. Why spend the money for a cooler if you don't need it? You don't know if you need one unless you have a gauge, if you need one it makes sense to have a gauge anyway. It's my opinion that anyone who tows anything over 3,000lbs should have one.
3000#'s or even 4000#"s of low profile boat is not a huge thing to ask of an Ex.
The accident 3 weeks ago may have done more damage than you realize?
I towed 7500#'s of HIGH profile TT up those passes in the Rockies and Big Horns and the engine temps NEVER moved a bit (I know because I mark my instrument guage "normal" needle position with white grease pencil to notice even the SLIGHTEST movement)...I now tow 9000#'s of HIGH profile TT...still no issues...although I do only have 30K miles on mine...
I suspect that there is more to the accident than you or your mechanic is noticing...if it never did it before and now after the accident...I'd be searching for something...perhaps the fan fuse?...
when the fan clutch engages you can not stop the fan. when engine is very hot or overheating if you pullover and pop the hood aand shut off the engine the fan should not freespin if it does the clutch is not working and needs to be replaced. another trick which i do not suggest on plastic fans is while the overheating engine is still running use a old rubber heater hose and put in path of fan if hose stops fan clutch is bad if fan beats hose to death then clutch is good.
good luck.
