I have a 2004 f250 super duty v10. I have been thinking about trading for a 2005 250 6.0 lariat with 50ooo miles on it, I realy like the 250 super duty truck but with all the problems I am reading about the 6.0 I am not sure if it would be a good trade.I pull an 8500 lbs trailer sometimes.I own 2 trucks now and only need one I was thinking the 6.0 would give me better gas miles and last longer than my v10 which I now have 64k on. After reading all the bad info on the 6.0 it has shaken my trust in the diesle engines.
the 6.0L's are hit or miss. Run an oasis, test drive it, look for signs of a tuner, look for oil underneath.
not all 6.0's have problems, and later you get in the series the better they got. I have a 03, apparently the most problomatic of them all and i have 62k miles on mine and its tuned and i drag race and sled pull with it and then drive it to work everyday.
Once you do some research, get rid of the problem child issues, run clean oil and keep it clean and run some additives, there not that bad. Ive yet to have a problem with mine.
key is maintence. you take care of it, it will take care of you.
My personal truck is a 7.3, but I've bought 3 6.0's for work. I had a squirrel eat a wiring harness on 1, another rolled 3 times and was totaled but none of them have had any mechanical issues in about 140,000 miles combined driving. All of them 06's. I'd check an oasis and for any signs of mods, otherwise I wouldn't worry too much.
That Is Good Advice I Love My Truck, the 6.0 Is A Good Motor You Just Have To Keep The Oil Changed Every 5000 Miles And Leave The Stock Breather On It.i Use 5w40 Rotella Syn.my Truck Seams To Like It.another Thing Is You Have To Use A Good Teck,if You Will Post Were You Will Be Using The Truck Someone Will Be Glad To Advise You On What Dealership To Use.go Deisel You Will Never Go Back To A Gas Burner!!!
Another thing to note, when looking at it check the glove box as well for signs of a bullydog system. If it looks like a box was set up in there, Do a u-turn and dont look back. More then likly was dogged.
If it has a decent amount of miles on it, alot of the bugs are probaly worked out by now.

I am kinda curious as to why you specifically go after that one, when if there were any tuners you run the risk of it being dogged?

I dont know about the truck the ford dealer called me to let they know they have it for sale and to come look at it it has 50k on it with 50 left on the warrenty the motor that is. I am still leaning on keeping my v10 just not sure if it is worth the risk of getting one of the problem diesles
Well I have a 2006(bought in 05) and 91k on the odometer(it had 20 miles when I got it, so it was "new") and I haven't had any problems and I have had 2 different types of tuners, zero problems, one was a bullydog system (although that wasn't way I had asked superdudey why he was going after them, I was just wanting to know if they were known for issues like edge and tranny problems in an auto) and the other SCT(went with this one because I was planning bigger upgrades that the standard tuner couldn't account for). 2005 you run less of a risk of problems then an 03 or 04 diesel on average, whenever you buy a new/newer vehicle you run the risk that that one is particular is going to be reliable.
the 6.0 has turned into a very reliable powerplant & with the torque shift auto it is the premire diesel powerplant for towing! I have 20k on my 07 with 0 thats ZERO problems it has not seen the dealer since i took it home & I use this truck! 84mi roundtrip 6 times a week, tow a 42' warrior 5er with 6 fullsize quads & a 700 ranger gross wt @ 16987lbs I tow @ 75 to 85 mph & i'm heavily modded! change youre oil @ 5k & only use racor filters drive it like you stole it & enjoy the 6.0 grin, they rock!
reason i say look in the glovebox is alot of times people hide there box's in there.
Also, think about it, if you think a truck has had a tuner would you consider buying it not knowing how it was drove? I for one wouldnt want to buy my truck knowing how i drive it lol.
if a dealer is selling it, note everything and make sure they know it before you leave so they cant pin it on you when you come back for warranty claims.
i agree with hotrodd, i drive mine 80miles a day, i run it hard and i tow every once in a awhile a good bit and ive yet to have any issues. i love my truck and would buy another in a minute.
