Wimpy horn

I got a great deal on an '00 Ranger, and love everything about it except for its horn. It almost sounds like a blown speaker, kind of muffled and weak sounding.

I was wondering what the reccomended replacement would be. Should I go get a "new" one from the junk yard, is the stock horn in these things just plain wimpy? If so, should I get one from an older Ranger or F series, or what sort of aftermarket options are there?

I learned to drive in a '90 Ranger, love these little trucks!

Thanks,

Scott

Having burned out my stock one, gotten annoyed with it's aftermarket replacement, I've now found the solution. Old horns. Horns from pre-'90 or so Ford or GMs I know will mount up, as they ground through their mount and have a single wire connection. They tend to me much louder and have more bass that common normal everyday horns we hear. (What's up with the pitiful horns of late anyways?)

I've now got one that another member sent me from a '70's Ford pickup if I remember correctly...it's LOUD. I like.

You could also do an air horn/compressor combination... Or the stock Ford horn. New runs around $70. You want a 'dual note' horn unless you like the single less agressive tone. Looke for two trumpets, not just one.

If you do go for air horns and compressors, you gotta find a space to put them, especially the nice ones. Don't buy that crap on eBay, anything less than $100 IMO is nothing but a high pitched waste. If you're gonna go through all the work of getting compressors and real pipes, do it right. And I have to disagree with powerstorke6ltr (sorry buddy), I find a single note but loud horn just as aggressive as a dual note horn.

By the way, this is my 7,777 post. lol.

No problem at all... The way a horn sounds is a matter of personal opinion, just as the looks of a car... You can get a trumpet with built in air compressor from griots garage... Those are decent...

You can get OEM replacement horns from Autozone, same brand as the original. Just look for something a little louder and hook it up.

When one of the horns died on my '94 SHO I replaced it with something much louder. So now when I blast the horn at some fool, people definitely know about it.

If you wanna go big, you could always get train horns. Those are fun. Now...where you'll put a 50 gallon tank and a huge compressor...well that's up to you.

I'm with Rock on this one, I got a much louder horn. People tend to be suprised when that "little truck" makes a big noise.

The old Cadillac horns are loud and sound like a bloody train.

Well, went to the U-pull-it here in town and got a dual horn setup from a '91F150. With a little bit of wiggling to get it into place, it bolted right up where the old one was. Spliced the wire and it was good to go.

Much louder and much better sound. Grand total of $13.13 for the horns and a single horn from another Ranger, JIC the dual didn't fit.

Thanks,

Scott McNeely

Glad you got it running good and loud now.

I love how that video comes up every time we have a horn discussion. Makes me laugh every time.
