why are you replacing the one in the truck? if it aint broke dont fix it..lol but i would go with whoever advertises the best warrenty, experience tells me stay away from jasper and rmp(divison of ford) but ford remans are ok. some of the guys on here swear by.....brain fart, i'm thinking ats? but i cant remember the name, i have no experience with them
It's more $$, but in the long run you save big. They build a bullet proof tranny IMO, their cusomer service is next to none. There are guys on this site that abuse their trannys (sled pullers, drag racing ect) and still get warrantied if and when there is a failure.
are you sure its not a drivline vibration? is yours extended cab or crew? if so check the carrier bearing they can cause a ton of 1st gear vibration. typicly if your trans is slipping at the point you can notice it then the trans light will come on and at the very least the epc defaults and you get some very impressive shifts so i'm leaning away form your trans at this point
i have a crew cab the reason i thought it was the tranny is i only notice it with a heavy load. i had the local shop scan the computer and there were no codes
if theres no codes i'm stickin with the shaft bearing, heavy loads can drasticly change your angle it could need to be shimmed, the 99 ups had a tsb to shim them for that same vibration, best bet is roll under there and looks at it, grab and give her a shake, if your still not sure, build her up and launch that sucker wot from a stand still and see if you notice any vibration at all, odds are you'll see some so fix that bearing, 80 bucks from ford 25 from advance auto, my truck eats um up being lifted without ladder bars, i get alot of twist up in the springs and i go through one a year, about 30-40k miles, also you can load her up to the point that it shudders and roll underneith and look at your shaft angle too, but my guess is the bearing is just wore out, ever replaed it in those 226k? avg life on a stocker is 100k give or take a few
I checked the carrier bearing on hte drive shaft and it does seem to have a small amount of pplay in it. I guess i'm running to the auto parts store for a new one. Where do you take teh drive shaft apart to get the old bearing off and the new one on. In side the rubber boot just behind the bearing?
c00nhunter nailed this one. Good catch. I tried to rep ya but I gotta spread some around 1st.
Yep, you have to separate the 2 shafts. Mark them! so you get it back where it belongs. The center support a.k.a carrier bearing is a PITA to remove. It's pressed on, I use a cutoff wheel to get it off then all you need is a chunk of pipe to press (hammer) it back on.
Much better than a new tranny!!!! It is so nice when it's a quick, simple, cheap fix. This will probably get rid of a high speed vibration that you didn't even know you had.
I'd get a huge tranny fluid cooler if I were you and go ahead and service your tranny. They love new filter and fluid every 25K-30K.
I agree a bearing is much easier to swollow then a new tranny. Who/what would you all recomend for a tranny cooler besides as big a one I can stuff in there?
