I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this problem with their fuel gauge. With the pivot arm all the way down, my gas gauge reads half tank. When I raise it up, it goes to full and bounces back to half. This is a new sending unit. If I hook up the old sending unit, it reads normal again. The new sending unit is a 10 ohm for stock gauges. Is this what a fuel gauge acts like if the ohms aren't correct? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Yup. They have to be a match. The gauge is expecting a certain resistance to work properly and the sending unit isn't providing what's it looking for. I used an after market sender and gauge in my truck so I don't know what you need to make the stock gauge work. My gauge and sender were 33-240 Ohm.
I guess I can use my old sending unit because it works and reads fine. I bought the sending unit from CPP in Anaheim. They state they only have two types of sending units, mine might be the other one. The other problem is they may not return this sending unit because its already cut to fit and not new in the package. I hate having to go through several sending units to find the right one that works. Very time consuming. Thanks for your help guys.
If the CPP sender is like some aftermarket units the rod that holds the float can be removed to cut/setup for your application. I assume that is what you already "cut" to fit. Maybe they will exchange just the sender portion and you can keep and reuse the float. Just a thought.
Ed, I have a spare sending unit from No Limit that your welcome to if it will work. I have no remembrance of why I have it left over. Hopefully it is the one you need.
!0 ohms one way but I,m not getting a reading the other way?

I think I ended up getting a new one with my new guages, and had this one left over.

Correction to the above: I am getting a reading of 90 ohms full and 0 ohms empty.
It is a VDO instruments fuel level sender kit P/N 226 008
I appreciate the offer Wayne. I just got off the phone with Jeff from CPP. I checked the ohms on the sender he sent me. At bottom, .05 at top .55. The sender in my truck right now, I forgot the reading at bottom, but the top is .126. So the sender is definitely wrong. Your .90 will more than likely work and it seems I have an aftermarket fuel gauge rather than the original gauge that came with the trucks. Anyways, CPP is going to send me the correct one I believe it's a .90 like Wayne's. I had to pay $40 for the sender unit which is not bad, and I can send theirs back when I get the new one. I had to modify the one they sent, so I may not be able to send it back. You learn the hard way. I should of checked the ohms in the first place and I would of avoided all this. The stereo shop around the corner checked the ohms for me, but I think I better invest in a digital ohms meter instead of guess if my guage is stock or aftermarket and what the ohms might be????. Thanks again everyone for your help. I'll let you know how the new sender tests out.
