Fuel gauge problem

Fuel gauge problem
'87 F150 5.0L shortbed 4wd.....I replaced the fuel tank due to holes and the sending unit/intank fuel pump. The gauge worked very erratically with the old sending unit...going from full (pegged) to 1/4 tank back and forth. I checked the old one with an ohm meter and it would not read unless you pushed against the sending unit and then moved the float up and down. Before installing the new sending unit, I checked this one with the ohm meter and it worked fine..the needle on the meter going back and forth in sync with the float. After installing and filling up with gas, the gauge on the dash is reading about 2 thirds full and has not budged in 130 miles. Anybody have a clue as to whats going on?
