MAF contaminated?

Hey guys.
I started experiencing some surging when accelarating and at steady speeds (40-55 mph mostly). It started happenning right about the time I oiled my K&N filter (cannot exactly remember if it was before or after that). Is it possible that I got my MAF contaminated. I tried cleaning it with special MAF cleaner but that did not help. Should I go ahead and replace it?
P.S. (all the plugs, Cops, PCV, fuel filter have been replaced, no CEL light on)
01 Exp EB 4X4

Thanks a lot in advance

While it might be the MAF sensor, it might be one of many other components as well. It could get expensive replacing items or you might nail it right off the bat...tough call.

Doubt it is the MAF

Could be many things. Might be throttle position sensor.

Why do you say TPS sensor? What info that the OP gave points you that way?

Start by cleaning the MAF sensor with electrical contact cleaner or a throttle body cleaner. If it is really bad, use a q-tip and CAREFULLY scrub the wires with the q-tip and TB cleaner.

Just a guess really. Your description about surging when under load (cruising) the TPS should be steady. Almost sounds like it is sending a false signal about the relative position of the throttle.

General rule - check the obvious, simplest thing first.

I originally thought the same thing, but have never read where anybody has posted about replacing the TPS. Then again I can't recall too many having to replace the MAF sensor either.

Pomial, look back to my original post. If you start replacing random components and sensors, you could be out a fortune and still never lick the problem.

The reason I ask is that I see a lot of people on here throw out things like the IAC or TPS right away no matter what the issue. I can see your logic here, but I don't think that the TPS is the problem now. A faulty TPS will cause more problems than just the surging.

My guess is that it is something MAF related as the OP said that it started when he oiled his K&N filter. Getting oil on the MAF from over-oiling is quite common. Like I said, make sure that the MAF is clean as a dirty MAF can cause a lot of different problems.

For example, my friend has a CAI on his 96 Mustang GT. When we went to have the car tuned, the tuner was seeing 18:1+ AFR due to a dirty MAF. As soon as I cleaned it, the car cleaned up and it ran much better and he was able to get it tuned.

Check the MAF for oil as I would be willing to bet that it was just over oiled.

I did try cleaning MAF but it did not help. What else can I do? (replace, clean again or something else)

I'll try cleaning with Q tip in a few days. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks for the suggestion
