Gearing

I have a 2005 F250SD 4x4 with 5.4L V8...and use it as an everyday driver and pull 5000lbs nearly every weekend...what's the best gearing to use...I believ I have stock 3.73, would it be worth going up to the 4.10? or more...

It would help if you have issues with acceleration or climbing up mountain passes. From evidence other members have posted, it doesn't seem to hurt fuel mileage to step up to a 4.10 ratio.

I tow 8000 pounds (+/-) with my truck (see sig and pic) and don't have any major issues. Maybe the transmission makes the difference?

I've done some searching (but for the V10) and it seems you can go to 4.30's without hurting too much mpg. There isn't too much of a change from 3.73's to the 4.10's to make worth the money. That could just be the V10 though....

It isn't as subtle of a change as you might think. Just by going from a 3.73 gear set to a 4.10 gear set (no other changes) a 2007 F-250 5.4L 4x4 tow rating jumps almost 2000 pounds.

I went from 3.73's to 4.56's and noticed no MPG difference. I am getting anywhere from 10-13 mpg of mixed driving. I was really worried about going that low with stock tires but am very happy I did. At 80 mph I am just under 3,000 rpms. I ocassionally pull a 7,600 lb camper and it does okay for a 5.4L. I get anywhere from 7-9 mpg towing depending on the terrain.

Going from 3.73's to 4.30's is a 14% difference in torque to the ground. That's a big difference when you're pulling a load, or just driving around stop-and-go when empty.

Your towing and around-town MPGs should go up, or at least stay the same, not go down.

On the highway, the Ford modulars all seem to like more gearing and don't really care MPG-wise.

All in all, the 14% reduction (or thereabouts) in strain on the transmission is worth it.

I'm considering going to 4.56's myself, I currently have 3.73's and already went up one inch in tire diameter over stock.

I definitely recommend Randy's Ring & Pinion. The place that installed mine recommended them as well. I don't know if you will beat their prices.

Unhappy Need Help

Hi everybody I'm about to by a F250 4X4 Long box XLT X-CAB.
But I Have to choose between two trucs about the same price the only difference one have 3.73 the other have 4.10 I will not really tow heavy load but I plan tu put a 2300 lb slide-in camper in it for the weekend the rest of the time is unloaded with half highway and half city use about 18000 m per year.
Which one should I choose.

4.10's

You'll put less strain on the transmission driving around town and hauling the camper, and the difference in MPGs (if any) will be so small you'll never know the difference.
