I have noticed that when I occasionally set the cruise control in 4th gear ... and then push the clutch in to change to 5th ... the engine races and the cruise control is not disengaged.
I tend to do this in all my cars when I set the cruise control in a speed limit that is lower than when I would normally be in 5th gear ..... almost all limits with my VW. My VW kills the cruise and all my past cars with CC and Standard Trannys did.
Is there a switch on the clutch system that should do this on my F150?
Is it located under the dash on the pedal and wired into the brake switch, or on a separate circuit, or is it attached to the master or slave clutch cylinder?

I have a 93 and before the cruise stopped working it would rev up before it disengaged. But it stopped working before i installed the tach so i dont know how hi it would get.
How hi is your getting, Is it red lining or are you killing the cruise?
im working on fixing mine, if i can get it fixed ill take it out and see how hi it goes.
I saw it go from around 2400 rpm when I switched out of 4th around 60ish MPH and get to about 3000 rpm before I engaged 5th ... half second or less. I have a 4.9 .... don't know what the redline is since gauges are made for all engines ... but I know the 4.9 is near it at that point, since it doesn't produce much power after 2700 rpm.
I also think it has disengaged other times when I accidentally turned it on on the long road into work with the 45mph speed limit in 4th gear ... since that is under 2000rpm in 4th ... I noticed it cut out if I took a little longer to shift with the clutch in, but it should be more instantaneous. It may be cutting on the rev limiter and not the switch???
Ya i have a 4.9 to and i have had the tach up too 4500 (stupid crappy mazda trans poping out of 3rd.) With out hitting a rev limiter, scared the crap outta me and i wouldnt suggest ever doing it. But supposedly the redline on a 4.9 is 5k. Which is crazy and i might be wrong. But thats what iv heard.
I know when mine was working, when ever i would hit the clutch it would always rev up a little. It didnt sound like it does when you get near 4500 but the cruise might have a separate rpm limit.
Ill work on it tomorrow and see if i can figure out why it just stopped working.

I've got the Mazda trans and 300 too and I'm in a similar situation. The other day I was driving home, cruise control on about 60 mph. Some moron passes me and then slows down for an exit and I hit the clutch. Now about six months ago that would actually disengage it without any problems....not this time. When I hit the clutch the engine revved and I thought I might have killed my truck.
I glanced at the tach and saw it pass 4000.....I'm not sure where the needle stopped as I was too busy wincing....
So far the truck's fine, but the cruise is getting disconnected until I have time to research it.
I have not looked at mine to try and figure out the problem yet .... next week when I am on vacation I will be working on the truck and two of the cars ... this is one of the things on my truck list ... hopefully the other parts come in for my other items.
