I have recently bought an 89 F-250 4x4 with an E40D and it sometimes shifts real hard. It will rap up to about 3 grand and then its like boom you're side steppin the clutch on a manual. I've checked the vacuum regulator valve on top of the engine and that's working fine and the diaphram on the transmission is too working fine. Is it something internal or is it just because it didn't run for a year before I bought it. It only has 85,000 miles on it and I refuse to believe my transmission is going out. Please help!!!!
My dads old truck did that from second to third gear and it was just the trans going out. I do not know a lot more about it but congrats on the truck and hope everything works out. Others should drop in and give some more info.
The E4OD is an all electric contol transmission, so if you are checking vaccume components it is a C6. If it is a E40D the tach and speedometer need to be working correctly, and the Fuel Injection Lever position Sensor (Drivers side of Injector pump) needs to be adjusted correctly.
Engine off key on the middle wire with a probe slipped in along side the wire should read 1.05 to 1.2 volts at the idle position, and 3.8 but not more than 4.3 volts at the wide open throttle position.
I am not too familiar with the C6, but have got tto know the E4OD somewhat!
Welcome to the site, others will come allong with more info, but we need to know which tranny you have!!!
Well its all vaccum so if you say that the E40D is all electrical then I must have a C6. It only has 3 gears and I can't seem to find anything on the truck about the transmission.
Yep C6, pull the pan and do a fluid and filter change, check for excessive amount of crud. Sitting may have allowed things to dry out, so a good flush and new fluid wouldn't hurt.
yeah do the fluid change first. if it still does it you can ajust the vacuum control on the side of the injector pump. there are two screws that hold it on just loosen them and rotate just a touch and drive it to see if its better or worse. i believe that counterclockwise is softer and earlier. clockwise is harder and later, but don't hold me to it. do not go to soft much driving like that can mess up the tranny.
you can also ajust the vacuum modulater on the tranny. remove the hose and use a flat head screwdriver to turn the ajustment on the inside.
check your vacuum modulater for a green band. green is for the diesels.
the C6 is a very very TOUGH transmission still made by ford today for use in aircraft tugs.
