I got my first tranny service on my 04 scab. 72000 miles. All they did was hook it up to the flush mach. They didn't drop the pan and change the filter. This was at a Ford dealer. It was about $150 which I though seemed cheap, so I looked closer at the receipt and that's when I noticed no parts just fluid. I went back in and asked. They said they just flush them. My Chrysler Concord was like $280, they do a full service. I'm glad it's cheaper, as long as it's the right way to do it. Any thoughts
I changed my fluid at 60k miles and I'll change the filter and fluid again at 100k. I've seen the filters come off with 40-60k on them and they're clean as a whistle.
It will be fine. I got an early production Escape and it was the first transmission service the dealership had done on the Escape (30K in 10 months) and they found out the filter is not serviceable with the transmission in the vehicle.
The local oil change shop replaces filter/fluid/seal for less than a flush from the dealer.
More times than not they are just changing the fluid that is in the pan. That is only part of the total fluid. They'd have to drain the TC somehow to get rid off all the fluid.
It was nice when the TC had a drain plug, but AFAIK, the 2004+ trucks do not have it. My friends old Expy had a rubber plug you could pop out to access the TC drain. That was nice.
It is my understanding that the tranny filter is essentially there to act as a fine screen. It will not become "clogged" unless there was a catastrophic failure in the tranny, at which point the filter will not be of much use (to save the tranny). I, too, have seen filters out of the 4R70 tranny with 75K miles on it that were perfectly fine. A magnet didn't pick up much after I opened it.
In my wife's old Xterra, there was just a metal screen, no real "filter".

thanks for the input. I let those quick lube places do my oil when I don't feel like doing it myself, I would never let those guys get close to my tranny. I'm probably a better auto mechanic than some of the guy's that work at those places, and I'm an electrician. I also don't think they do the flush. I bet they don't get 2-3 quarts. Besides the fluid in the TC you also have the cooling lines and radiator. I try to avoid the dealer as much as possible, $$$$ some things, it's not worth chancing.
